Real Madrid Secures 3-2 Comeback Win Against AEK Athens in Champions League
Federico Valverde scored a decisive stoppage-time goal to maintain Real Madrid's perfect record in the European competition.
Real Madrid secured a dramatic 3-2 victory against AEK Athens in the Champions League at the OPAP Arena on Wednesday night. Manager José Mourinho's side twice came from behind before securing all three points through a late strike, keeping their undefeated streak intact in the league phase.
The hosts made a strong start when Aboubakary Koita opened the scoring in the 12th minute, putting pressure on the Spanish giants. Real Madrid responded in the 32nd minute through Jude Bellingham, who finished off a pass from Marc Cucurella to level the score. Despite controlling a significant share of possession, the visitors struggled with defensive transitions and remained vulnerable to AEK's vertical play.
The match intensified in the second half when AEK reclaimed the lead in the 75th minute courtesy of Stavros Pilios. However, Real Madrid reacted immediately as Kylian Mbappé equalized just three minutes later following an assist from Denzel Dumfries, setting the stage for a frantic finale.
With the match heading toward a draw, substitute Federico Valverde delivered the decisive blow in the 92nd minute. The Uruguayan midfielder unleashed a long-range strike from 27 meters out to seal the 3-2 victory. The late tactical adjustments by Mourinho, including the introductions of Valverde and Brahim Díaz, proved vital in changing the momentum of the game.
Reflecting on the match, Bellingham stated, "Match very difficult. We have much worked to win this one and come back twice. A very important victory on the path of this season in Champions." He added, "Another comeback, but this is the mentality of Real Madrid and the mentality with which we must continue for the rest of the season."
Beyond the result, the evening marked a historic milestone for Bellingham. At 23 years and 128 days old, the English international became the youngest player in Champions League history to reach 60 appearances, surpassing former goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who set the milestone in 2004. Bellingham also established himself as the youngest player to score in seven consecutive Champions League seasons.
Following the conclusion of the fourth matchday, Real Madrid holds 12 points from four matches, maintaining a flawless record in the group. Meanwhile, AEK Athens remains on three points with one win and three defeats in the competition.
