The RC Lens suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Club Bruges on Wednesday evening during the third matchday of the UEFA Champions League league phase at the Jan Breydel Stadium. Despite controlling large stretches of the opening 45 minutes, the French side failed to capitalize on its scoring opportunities and was ultimately punished by a clinical Belgian attack.

Manager Yannick Cahuzac’s squad entered the fixture looking to recover from a home defeat against Sporting Portugal. After an even first half, the match turned decisively in stoppage time when Club Bruges captain Hans Vanaken opened the scoring at the 45th plus third minute, sending the hosts into halftime with a crucial lead.

The second half began disastrously for the visitors. Just five minutes after the restart, Joaquin Seys doubled the advantage for Club Bruges in the 50th minute, stretching the deficit and complicating any hopes of a comeback for the Racing players. Carlos Forbs later secured the victory by adding a third goal in the 72nd minute, sealing a final score of 3-0.

Lens players expressed profound frustration after the match, noting that their strong early performance deserved a different outcome. Stand-in captain Matthieu Udol remarked in the mixed zone: "We were punished over a few chances." Coach Yannick Cahuzac echoed similar sentiments regarding the team's inability to convert its dominance into goals.

The defeat leaves RC Lens with three points after three matches, having won their opening fixture against Slavia Prague before suffering consecutive losses. Dropping to 27th place in the standings, the French club now finds itself outside the qualification spots as the competition progresses.

Prior to kickoff, the match was classified as high-risk by UEFA due to security concerns involving local rivalries, prompting strict travel arrangements for the 1,470 visiting supporters who made the journey in escorted buses. On the pitch, Lens must quickly regroup ahead of their upcoming European fixture at home against Como on November 4 to revive their qualification ambitions.
