Queen Mary of Denmark Shares Rare Look at Family Life
Queen Mary and King Frederik offered royal watchers a glimpse into their pastoral home life with new footage of their dogs.
Queen Mary of Denmark has offered royal observers an unexpected glimpse behind closed doors, releasing personal home video footage documenting her family’s tranquil country lifestyle. The seasonal clip features the royal household’s two dogs, Grace and Coco, racing along a path covered in vibrant gold and amber leaves.
Royal families typically maintain tight control over personal imagery, making this direct social media dispatch an unusual treat for royal watchers. Accompanied by her husband, King Frederik, and their four children—Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine—the queen captured the seasonal shift with an understated message: “Autumn trip in beautiful colours. Her Majesty The Queen.”
The scenic backdrop points to Denmark’s lush outdoor sanctuaries, filmed either in Gribskov Forest directly behind the family’s summer home at Fredensborg Palace, or within The Deer Park located just seven miles outside Copenhagen. While the video showcases pure countryside escape, the family divides their schedule between historic official residences and pastoral retreats, with their primary home base situated at Frederik VIII’s Palace in Copenhagen’s Amalienborg complex.
Reflecting on her journey into European court life, Mary has previously spoken about the early cultural adjustments she faced after relocating from Australia. Navigating an unfamiliar culture, an intricate new language, and intense public scrutiny without her childhood support network proved emotionally demanding during those initial years.
Recalling her transition, she shared in an interview with Australian Women’s Weekly, "Moving to a new country, a new language, not having support of family and friends … I mean, of course, I’ve always had the support of my husband – boyfriend then – but there have been times when I’ve felt a little bit like a fish out of water."
Over time, that initial isolation gave way to a grounded lifestyle centered on Danish outdoor traditions. Today, active family routines—from weekend cycling trips to forest trails and regular swimming outings—define their household rhythm whenever their official schedules allow for a break.
Highlighting the importance of downtime, she added, "A good weekend is when we don’t have any plans. We love a Saturday morning when you don’t have to rush, when we can play, read the papers and stay in our pyjamas until late. And then we love being physically active. We go out, ride bikes, we go to the park, go walking in the forest and we all love swimming."
