Queen Camilla and King Charles Caught in Downpour During Caribbean Tour
The royal couple faced a sudden tropical rainstorm in Antigua and Barbuda while continuing their official tour and addressing historical slavery ties.
Queen Camilla and King Charles III faced an unexpected tropical downpour on November 1 during their official visit to Antigua and Barbuda. The sudden storm disrupted the 45th-anniversary independence parade held at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, soaking both royals as they fulfilled their public duties.
As the heavy rain started pelting down, Queen Camilla was quickly handed a clear umbrella and escorted to a covered seating area. Her hair and dress were dampened by the gusty winds and heavy precipitation, leading her to laugh off the chaotic situation and tell reporters, "I've given up."
Meanwhile, King Charles was left exposed to the elements for several moments while staff members worked to secure him an umbrella. Video footage captured the 77-year-old monarch looking visibly frustrated, gesturing with his arms and asking, "Where's my umbrella?" before his equerry stepped in with a black umbrella.
Despite the brief delay and getting thoroughly drenched, the King maintained his composure and continued with the ceremony by inspecting members of the armed forces and police. He later lightened the mood with a quip about his soaked attire, telling Prime Minister Gaston Browne and onlookers, "I think I'm about to grow watercress on my suit."
Royal commentators noted that the monarch's team may have been slow to react because custom in Antigua dictates remaining motionless and quiet during the national anthem. Nevertheless, royal watchers expressed online concern over the King being left in heavy rain while undergoing cancer treatment, though both royals ultimately carried on with their engagements.
Prior to the weather incident, Queen Camilla joined the later legs of the Caribbean tour, having skipped earlier stops in the Bahamas and Guyana due to her well-documented dislike of flying. Her arrival on day five coincided with the couple attending a church service in St. John's.
The broader Caribbean tour has also involved sensitive diplomatic engagements regarding Britain's colonial past. Earlier in the trip, King Charles publicly acknowledged the great suffering and injustices of the transatlantic slave trade, stating it was right to recognize historical wrongs as leaders prepared to discuss the matter further at the Commonwealth summit.
