Portugal national team head coach Jorge Jesus has broken his silence regarding Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to retire from international soccer. The announcement follows weeks of speculation and a tumultuous period that included Ronaldo's departure from a national team training camp during the UEFA Nations League group stage.

Speaking to the media, Jesus revealed that he had urged the 41-year-old forward to continue playing for his country. "I had the opportunity to talk about this matter before the first list. I asked him to continue with me," Jesus stated, adding that he had intended to keep the legendary player in his squad. The manager emphasized that Ronaldo remains a global icon, a role model for youth, and a fundamental piece of Portuguese football history.

The fallout between the player and the coach originated earlier in the season. Following a heated confrontation during a national team camp, Ronaldo left the squad and was subsequently suspended and fined. Legal representatives and associates later pointed to mounting tensions behind the scenes, noting that the partnership was bound to face challenges given the strong personalities involved.

Despite the friction, Jesus stated that he bears no guilt and would not change the choices he made regarding the team. He noted that the departure was a moment that would have happened eventually, regardless of the immediate circumstances. "I don't feel guilty about anything, I respect his decision," Jesus told reporters, explaining that he made choices with the collective team in mind.

Meanwhile, Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) President Pedro Proença paid tribute to the nation's all-time leading scorer. Expressing profound gratitude, Proença praised Ronaldo's two decades of leadership, record-breaking achievements, and status as the greatest symbol of Portuguese sports on the global stage, stating that no tribute will ever be enough to thank him.

In the wake of Ronaldo's retirement, Jesus announced his 28-man squad for upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales. The roster features seven changes, including absolute newcomer Gustavo Varela, the top scorer in Italy's Serie A, alongside returning players looking to secure their spots. Portugal currently leads its group and requires only a single point from its remaining fixtures to secure the top position.
