Polish President Karol Nawrocki Confronts Officials at Constitutional Tribunal
A high-stakes institutional crisis in Warsaw escalated late Friday after the suspension of the constitutional court's chief justice.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki abruptly cut short an official visit to Senegal and returned to Warsaw late Friday, setting off a tense confrontation outside the Constitutional Tribunal. The emergency return followed an announcement earlier in the day by the court's longest-serving judge, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, suspending Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski and Deputy Bartłomiej Sochański in an effort to restore the rule of law. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the courthouse amid a heavy police presence, shouting slogans and protesting the ousting of Święczkowski.
Upon returning to the capital, President Nawrocki held meetings at the presidential palace with Supreme Court President Zbigniew Kapiński and the suspended Święczkowski before heading directly to the tribunal building. Accompanied by security forces, Nawrocki entered the premises shortly after midnight, where a chaotic physical altercation immediately broke out at the entrance. Video footage shared on social media showed the president pushing through a crowd and confronting individuals blocking his path.
The physical encounter triggered sharply conflicting accounts from both sides of Poland's deep political divide. Supporters and allies of President Nawrocki condemned the incident as a direct assault on the head of state, with presidential aide Paweł Szefernaker accusing tribunal representatives of breaking the law. Conversely, critics and members of the centrist government characterized the president's actions as a violent breach of judicial immunity and a display of contempt for the judiciary. European lawmakers and local politicians exchanged heated accusations over the breach of protocol.
The immediate catalyst for the late-night showdown was a deepening institutional deadlock between Prime Minister Donald Tusk's pro-European coalition and the nationalist opposition party Law and Justice, known as PiS. Tusk's government has spent months attempting to reverse judicial changes implemented by the previous PiS administration, which ruled Poland from 2015 to 2023. Prime Minister Tusk defended the government's decisive measures on social media, asserting that restoring the rule of law after years of what he termed lawlessness is a difficult and painful yet necessary duty.
The European Union has previously criticized the Polish Constitutional Tribunal for failing to meet standards of independence and impartiality, following rulings that prioritized national legislation over EU law. While the current Polish government welcomed the scrutiny from European courts, the tribunal and its supporters rejected those findings and labeled the internal suspension of its leadership a coup d'état. The tribunal's official social media accounts maintained that Święczkowski remained the lawful head of the institution and argued that Korwin-Piotrowska could not legally assume the interim presidency without presidential swearing-in.
Outside the tribunal, tensions remained high as riot police cordoned off the area and warned unauthorized individuals to disperse. Protesters aligned with the opposition waved flags and chanted against the government, accusing Prime Minister Tusk of trampling on constitutional rights. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials reported making several arrests after demonstrators attempted to force their way through security barricades surrounding the complex.
As the political and legal battle intensifies, the question of who lawfully leads Poland's highest constitutional body remains entirely unresolved. With both executive and judicial factions refusing to back down, international observers have watched the unfolding events in Warsaw with growing concern, viewing the confrontation as an unprecedented escalation in Poland's ongoing constitutional crisis.
