Pensioners in Mexico Await Annual Bonus Payments for 2026

Retirees under the IMSS and ISSSTE systems are preparing for year-end disbursements with varying eligibility rules based on retirement regimes.

As the end of 2026 approaches, thousands of retirees in Mexico are preparing for the distribution of their annual bonus, known as the aguinaldo. This benefit is a significant component of the financial planning for those receiving pensions through the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE).

For ISSSTE pensioners, the 2026 aguinaldo payment schedule has been officially divided into two distinct periods. According to a decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, the first installment is set to be distributed starting November 10, 2026. The second portion of the bonus is scheduled to be deposited alongside the regular monthly pension payment on November 27, 2026.

The total amount for ISSSTE retirees is determined by the specific terms of their pension, with the potential to receive an equivalent of up to 40 days of their pension amount. Because some beneficiaries share a single pension, the total bonus is distributed proportionally among them based on their respective entitlements, meaning there is no uniform figure for every recipient.

In contrast, the IMSS manages its bonus payments based on the specific legal regime under which a retiree was granted their pension. Only those who retired under the 1973 Social Security Law are eligible for the annual aguinaldo, which is equivalent to one month of their base pension. This calculation excludes additional benefits such as family allowances or social assistance payments.

The distinction between the 1973 and 1997 laws is critical for IMSS beneficiaries. Retirees who fall under the 1997 law are not entitled to this annual bonus from the institute. Officials emphasize that this eligibility is strictly tied to the legal framework of the pension grant rather than the age of the retiree or the number of years they have been retired. Beneficiaries are encouraged to review their formal pension resolution documents to confirm their specific legal status.

For those eligible under the IMSS 1973 law, the bonus is typically issued during November. While historical data suggests the payment often arrives simultaneously with the regular monthly pension, the institute advises retirees to monitor official communications for the exact 2026 deposit dates. No formal application is required to receive these funds, as they are processed automatically for those who meet the established criteria.

If a retiree does not see the expected funds in their account following the official disbursement dates, they are advised to verify their pension resolution and contact the IMSS for guidance. The institute maintains that the bonus serves as a vital supplementary income, and understanding the specific rules of one's pension regime is essential to avoiding confusion regarding year-end financial expectations.
