Patrick Kane and Red Wings Meet as Dylan Larkin Sits Out Amid Trade Talks
The Chicago Blackhawks visit Detroit on Thursday night as veteran forward Patrick Kane chases his 900th career assist.
The Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings face off on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena, a matchup highlighted by Patrick Kane returning to Detroit and ongoing roster drama surrounding Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, with the game broadcast live on ESPN+.
For the Red Wings, all eyes are on Larkin, who requested a trade during the offseason and was stripped of his captaincy before training camp. Coach Todd McLellan announced that Larkin will not play against Chicago, stating that General Manager Shawn Horcoff would address the situation. According to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman, trade talks involving the former captain have escalated after he recently expanded his trade list to 10 teams.
Larkin, who has scored two goals and four assists this season, recently scored his second goal of the year during a four-game road trip that ended with a shootout victory in Edmonton. Despite the off-ice uncertainty, Detroit returns home with a renewed spirit, having gone 4-1-1 over its last six games to bring its record to 5-4-3.
Meanwhile, the Blackhawks enter the contest looking for their first road victory of the season, currently holding a 4-8-0 record. Chicago is coming off a 2-1 home victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Forward Patrick Kane assisted on Wyatt Kaiser's go-ahead goal in the third period of that victory.
Kane returns to Detroit after playing the past three seasons with the Red Wings before signing a two-year contract with the Blackhawks in July. The 37-year-old forward needs just one assist to become the 21st player in NHL history to reach 900 career assists, joining Sidney Crosby as the only active skaters to achieve the milestone.
In addition to Kane's pursuit of history, Chicago continues to build around young star Connor Bedard. The Blackhawks are aiming to correct their early-season road struggles under coach Jeff Blashill, who previously served as head coach of the Red Wings.
On the Detroit side, forward Emmitt Finnie has emerged as a key contributor in the absence of consistent offensive production, stepping into a prominent role alongside offseason addition Viktor Arvidsson. The Red Wings enter the matchup as favorites on home ice, while the Blackhawks look to leverage momentum from their recent win against Los Angeles.
