Panathinaikos hosted CSKA Sofia on Thursday at the OAKA Spyros Louis Stadium in Athens for the third round of the UEFA Conference League league phase. Entering the match as group leaders, the Greek side aimed to maintain their perfect start to the competition, while the Bulgarian visitors sought their first victory of the campaign.

The match remained scoreless for much of the first half as Panathinaikos controlled the tempo and created several scoring opportunities. The deadlock was finally broken in the 41st minute when Davide Calabria capitalized on a well-executed team play to score with his left foot, putting the hosts ahead 1-0.

The lead proved short-lived, however, as CSKA Sofia responded quickly before the halftime whistle. Just three minutes after conceding, Almeida struck in the 44th minute following a corner kick, firing a shot past Panathinaikos goalkeeper Iñaki Peña to level the score at 1-1.

Entering the contest, Panathinaikos had enjoyed a strong run of form, including a 2-0 victory over AEK Athens in their domestic league on November 1. Under manager Jacob Neestrup, the team had secured six points from their first two European fixtures, defeating Borac 2-1 and Kairat Almaty 5-1. Their attacking unit, led by Cyriel Dessers and Kings Kangwa, had been instrumental in their early success.

CSKA Sofia arrived in Athens looking to improve their standing after a challenging start to the European season. The Bulgarian side had previously suffered a 2-1 defeat to Monaco and earned a 2-2 draw against Nordsjælland. Despite their position in the standings, the team demonstrated resilience, particularly in their ability to score away from home.

The historical context of the matchup added intrigue, as the two clubs had not met in European competition since 1988. While CSKA Sofia held a historical advantage in their previous four meetings, the current squads approached the game with different tactical priorities. Panathinaikos looked to solidify their position for direct qualification to the round of 16, while CSKA Sofia fought to keep their progression hopes alive.

The match was officiated by a team led by referee Mohammed Al Hakim. Both managers faced tactical challenges, with Neestrup utilizing a 4-3-3 formation to maintain possession, while CSKA Sofia manager Markus Gisdol sought to exploit space through quick transitions. The presence of key players like Leandro Godoy for the visitors and the defensive organization of Stefan de Vrij for the hosts were central to the tactical battle on the pitch.
