Palermo extended its dominant run in Serie B on Sunday by defeating Carrarese 2-1 at the Renzo Barbera stadium, securing its fourth consecutive victory in the championship and fifth home win of the season. The Rosanero moved to 22 points in the standings, holding a five-point lead over second-place Mantova, while Carrarese remained rooted in the play-out zone with 7 points.

Despite Palermo holding the top spot in the standings, the visiting Carrarese started the match more aggressively. The Tuscan side tested the defense early with long-range efforts from Leopold Braunöder and Mattia Parlanti, with Parlanti striking the crossbar following a deflection off a Palermo defender in the tenth minute. Five minutes later, Palermo goalkeeper Mattia Perin was forced into a sharp save, tipping a close-range header from Filippo Ruggeri around the post.

The home side gradually grew into the contest and broke the deadlock in the 27th minute. Hernani delivered a brilliant individual effort down the flank, skipping past defenders before sliding a precise cross into the penalty area, where Dennis Johnsen expertly backheeled the ball home with his left foot to give Palermo a 1-0 lead. Just before halftime, Carrarese defender Daniele Oliana made a crucial sliding block to deny a dangerous shot from Joel Pohjanpalo.

Carrarese continued to push after the interval and squandered a golden opportunity to equalize in the 20th minute when substitute Michele Marconi raced through on goal only to shoot high over the bar. The visitors eventually found their breakthrough in the 29th minute. Marconi outpaced defender Tommaso Cassandro on the wing and squared a pass to substitute Simone Rubino, who fired past Perin from close range to make it 1-1.

Palermo responded swiftly to the setback and reclaimed the lead six minutes later. Pohjanpalo received a pass near the edge of the box from Hernani and fired a shot that took a deflection, falling kindly to substitute Nicolò Vavassori. Vavassori made no mistake from close range, driving the ball past Carrarese goalkeeper Nicola Pizzignacco to restore the advantage at 2-1.

Head coach Filippo Inzaghi praised his team's mental resilience after the match, highlighting their ability to bounce back immediately after conceding. «We are happy, we knew it would be a complicated match and it was. These points are worth double», Inzaghi stated. Commenting on the team's reaction to the equalizer, he added, «This team has already demonstrated many times that when it could give up or be beaten, it reacts and does so in this way. I think in the end we won a difficult match, but deservedly.»

With the latest victory secured, Palermo's attention quickly turns to an upcoming midweek fixture away against Pisa on Wednesday. For Inzaghi, the trip holds special significance after he led the Nerazzurri to promotion into Serie A last season. «Tonight we celebrate for a short time, Wednesday we will have an important match. I will return to a stadium where I left many friends, my heart, a fantastic season. It will be a special match for me, we will prepare for it in the best possible way», the coach concluded.
