Oxford United Secures Historic Derby Win Against Reading
Substitute-inspired goals lifted Oxford United to a 2-0 victory over Reading, marking their first win against their rivals in 27 years.
Oxford United defeated Reading 2-0 at the Kassam Stadium in the Thames Valley derby, claiming their first victory against their county neighbors since 1999. The League One fixture, played in front of a home crowd, saw Aaron Ramsey's side extend their impressive league run to 10 matches unbeaten.
Entering the match, Reading sat sixth in the league table with 22 points from 13 matches, holding strong momentum after securing three wins and a draw in their previous five outings. Meanwhile, Oxford United positioned themselves third in the standings with 23 points from 12 games, entering the contest unbeaten across their last five league fixtures.
The first half remained a tightly contested affair with few breakthrough moments, though both sides threatened early. Reading applied initial pressure with attacking plays from Kyreece Lisbie and Jack Marriott, while Oxford created chances through Aidomo Emakhu and a weak header from Michal Helik. Despite a scoreless first 45 minutes, both goalkeepers were forced into sharp saves to keep the score level.
The intensity elevated immediately after the interval when Reading struck the post through a Padhraic O'Connor header, followed by Simon Eastwood stopping a rebound attempt from Lisbie. Oxford quickly responded by stepping up pressure, as Cameron Brannagan tested the visitor's defense with a powerful free kick that required a diving save.
The decisive turning point arrived through strategic substitutions by manager Aaron Ramsey. Reading-born substitutes Gatlin O'Donkor and Mo Missanga entered the match and provided the offensive spark needed to break the deadlock.
Oxford broke through at a set piece when Brannagan delivered a clever short ball to O'Donkor, who fired a low shot into the bottom right corner. Shortly after, O'Donkor set up the second goal by heading a deep corner from Brannagan toward Missanga, who swiveled and flicked the ball past the goalkeeper into the net.
The 2-0 victory moves Oxford United four points clear of their Berkshire rivals in the League One table. Having safely navigated the closing minutes of the match, the team collected a significant three points and secured bragging rights in the long-standing regional rivalry.
