Nvidia and Other Chip Stocks Retreat Following Strong AMD Earnings
Semiconductor equities experience mixed trading sessions as investors weigh robust data center results against broader sector volatility and artificial intelligence spending concerns.
Semiconductor stocks experienced a mixed trading session as major chipmaker Nvidia retreated alongside rivals Intel and Broadcom, even as competitor Advanced Micro Devices delivered a blowout quarterly report. Nvidia shares traded down 2% to $202.32, while Intel fell between 3% and 5% and Broadcom slid 1%. The downward movement followed a recent historic market pullback that saw chip and memory stocks shed roughly $3.7 trillion in market value since October 6, driven by rising skepticism over corporate artificial intelligence infrastructure spending and neocloud debt.
Despite the broader market recovering in various sectors, artificial intelligence chip stocks lagged behind following AMD's earnings release. AMD reported third-quarter revenue of $13.38 billion, topping Bloomberg's consensus estimate of $13.08 billion, while adjusted earnings per share reached $2.09 compared to the anticipated $1.97. The primary driver for AMD was its Data Center segment, which surged 97% year over year to $8.5 billion. CEO Lisa Su stated that demand for Instinct and EPYC products continued to strengthen, adding that the company expects revenue to grow more than 80% in 2027 and anticipates fourth-quarter revenue to hit approximately $17 billion.
Analysts offered mixed reactions to AMD's performance, which kept the stock essentially flat at $483.34 during morning trading. Financial institutions adjusted their price targets in divergent directions; Bank of America lowered its target to $650 from $720, Mizuho cut its target to $610 from $705, Stifel raised its target to $725 from $700, and JPMorgan increased its target to $575. Analysts noted that AMD shares had already declined 22% over the preceding month, contributing to a muted response despite the record financial figures.
Meanwhile, Intel continued to suffer from a post-earnings slide extending from late October, when the company issued disappointing fourth-quarter revenue guidance between $15 billion and $16 billion, falling short of the $17.29 billion expected by analysts. Intel management projected a 12% decline in industry personal computer unit sales for 2026 and a 10% decline in 2027 due to memory shortages raising device prices. Nevertheless, Intel's Data Center and AI segment revenue rose 78% year over year to $7.32 billion, offering a bright spot amid the broader PC market weakness.
The diverging business models of these industry giants continue to shape market sentiment. Nvidia maintains a dominant market share by selling a full-stack artificial intelligence platform centered around its graphics processing units, networking hardware, and CUDA software. Broadcom constructs custom application-specific chips and networking silicon for major hyperscalers, whereas AMD designs processors and graphics units while outsourcing manufacturing to external partners. Intel operates its own manufacturing foundries, linking its financial outcomes directly to heavy capital expenditures and fabrication costs.
Market analysts point out that the massive capital expenditures by major technology companies continue to support the semiconductor industry. Recent developments, such as Broadcom securing $63 billion in bank financing to develop proprietary artificial intelligence chips for Anthropic alongside major equity offerings, demonstrate that corporate demand for specialized computing infrastructure remains robust. However, supply chain constraints and rising memory costs remain key factors as companies scale up production for upcoming architectures like AMD's Helios and Venice systems.
