Tampa Bay Lightning star and reigning NHL Most Valuable Player Nikita Kucherov has informed the franchise that he will not sign a new contract and has officially asked for a trade, according to a person with knowledge of the situation speaking on condition of anonymity.

Kucherov is currently in the final year of an eight-year, $76 million contract signed back in 2018. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the season. The stunning development was initially reported by Sportsnet.

General manager Julien BriseBois addressed Kucherov's status during his training camp-opening news conference last month, calling the Russian winger one of the greatest players in the history of the game. "Nikita is a historically great player," BriseBois stated at the time. "He's not just one of the best players in the world right now — maybe the best player in the world right now. He is one of the best players ever."

Since making his debut in 2013, Kucherov has accumulated 1,139 points across 891 regular-season games, ranking third among all players in that span behind only Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. He also leads all players with 177 playoff points during the same period, having captured two Stanley Cup titles with Tampa Bay, three regular-season scoring titles, and the Hart Trophy twice, including the 2025-26 campaign.

Just last weekend, the 33-year-old winger surpassed former captain Steven Stamkos to become the franchise's all-time career points leader. Through 12 games this season, Kucherov has recorded four goals and 11 assists for 15 points, placing him second in team scoring behind Brandon Hagel.

BriseBois had expressed optimism in mid-September regarding ongoing dialogue about a long-term extension to keep the star forward in Tampa Bay as part of their competitive core. However, those contract talks ultimately failed to produce an agreement.

Kucherov's trade request follows other high-profile moves across the league in recent months, involving stars such as Brady Tkachuk and Connor Hellebuyck. The departure of Kucherov threatens to shift the landscape for a Lightning team that has reached the postseason 12 times in 13 seasons and made four Stanley Cup final appearances during his tenure.
