NFL Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk Reveals Parkinson’s Disease Diagnosis

The former running back is focusing on treatment and maintaining an active lifestyle after noticing early symptoms while playing golf.

Marshall Faulk, the legendary NFL running back and Pro Football Hall of Famer, has publicly announced that he is living with Parkinson’s disease. The 53-year-old former St. Louis Rams and Indianapolis Colts star shared his diagnosis during an appearance on the “Caring Neurologist” podcast with Dr. Sandeep Thakkar.

Faulk first began to suspect a health issue while playing golf, a hobby he frequently enjoys. He initially attributed the rigidity he felt in his hand to the common nerves associated with putting. However, as the symptoms persisted after extended practice sessions, he realized the issue was more significant than simple fatigue or anxiety.

Reflecting on the discovery, Faulk noted that he considers himself fortunate to have identified the signs early enough to seek professional medical evaluation. He emphasized that he does not view the diagnosis as the end of his life, but rather as another challenge to be managed, similar to the physical obstacles he faced during his professional football career, such as recurring back pain and knee surgeries.

Since receiving his diagnosis, Faulk has been diligent about his treatment plan. He reported that his current medication has helped him maintain a more active lifestyle and improved his sleep quality. While he still experiences minor tremors and must remain vigilant regarding his balance and gait, he remains committed to his health and his role as the head football coach at Southern University.

Faulk’s disclosure adds to a growing conversation among former NFL players regarding the long-term health effects of their careers. Other notable figures, including Ahman Green, Brett Favre, and Bernie Kosar, have also spoken publicly about their experiences with Parkinson’s disease, highlighting the importance of awareness and early medical intervention for the condition.

Throughout his distinguished 12-season NFL career, Faulk cemented his legacy as one of the most versatile offensive players in league history. He finished his career with 12,279 rushing yards and 6,875 receiving yards, and he played a pivotal role in the St. Louis Rams' victory in Super Bowl XXXIV. Recently, his career achievements were highlighted when Alvin Kamara became the sixth player in NFL history to reach 5,000 rushing and 5,000 receiving yards, joining an elite list that includes Faulk, Marcus Allen, Lenny Moore, Tiki Barber, and Christian McCaffrey.
