New York Giants Coach John Harbaugh Faces Criticism Over Roster Management
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin questioned Harbaugh's recent decisions to bench and release running backs.
New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh has come under scrutiny for his recent personnel decisions regarding the team's running back corps. Following a series of roster moves, including the release of veteran running back Najee Harris, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin publicly characterized Harbaugh's management style as "killing mosquitoes with an axe."
The critique stems from Harbaugh's handling of his backfield, specifically after Harris questioned his limited opportunities on the field. Harbaugh stated that the decision to release Harris was made to optimize the roster and insisted there was nothing personal against the player. This move followed a period where the team struggled to find consistency at the position, with Harbaugh noting that he expects one of his running backs to step up and claim the primary role.
Earlier in the season, Harbaugh also benched running back Cam Skattebo following a costly fumble during a Week 5 game against the Washington Commanders that ended in a 27-27 tie. Harbaugh explained that he was dissatisfied with the rotation of four different running backs and sought to enforce higher standards of performance. Skattebo subsequently missed the following game against the New Orleans Saints.
Reflecting on the situation, Tomlin suggested that Harbaugh is using these drastic measures to assert his authority over a new team. Despite the professional disagreement, Tomlin emphasized that he maintains a deep respect for Harbaugh, noting that their long-standing rivalry as coaches in the AFC North has been a significant part of their respective careers.
Skattebo has since addressed his benching, describing it as a lesson that forced him to improve his ball security. His performance rebounded in Week 7 during a 27-21 victory over the Houston Texans, where he recorded 124 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. Harbaugh praised the effort, noting that Skattebo had performed well in practice leading up to the game.
During the same Week 7 victory, Skattebo suffered a hamstring injury during a pivotal 42-yard run in overtime. Despite the concern, Skattebo expressed optimism about his recovery, especially with the team entering a bye week. His status remains a point of interest as the Giants prepare for their upcoming Week 9 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
