New Feature Documentary Explores Life of Cinematographer Néstor Almendros
Production is underway for a Spanish-American co-production backed by Movistar Plus that chronicles the cinematic legacy and personal courage of Néstor Almendros.
Production has officially begun on Néstor, a feature-length documentary examining the life, career, and lasting legacy of legendary Spanish cinematographer Néstor Almendros. The project is a Spanish-American co-production backed by the ICAA and Movistar Plus, bringing together a prominent creative team to celebrate one of the most influential figures in European and international film history.
Almendros is celebrated worldwide for his groundbreaking work as a director of photography on major Hollywood productions, including Kramer vs. Kramer, The Blue Lagoon, and Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven. His visionary work on Days of Heaven earned him the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 1978, making him the first Spaniard to win an Oscar. Beyond his Hollywood success, he was a trusted collaborator for acclaimed European auteurs such as François Truffaut, Éric Rohmer, and Robert Benton.
Born in Barcelona in 1930 during the final years of the Spanish Civil War and the outset of Franco's dictatorship, Almendros experienced profound political upheaval early in life. His family was forced into exile in Cuba, where he lived through the revolution before facing persecution as a homosexual under Fidel Castro's regime. He eventually relocated to Paris, discovering artistic freedom and cementing his status as a master cinematographer of the Nouvelle Vague. Almendros passed away in New York in 1992 from AIDS.
Laurent Bouzereau, known for his work on Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind and Faye, is directing the documentary. The script was written by Esteve Riambau and Josep Maria Civit, who is also handling cinematography duties for the film. Academy Award winner Javier Bardem joins the project to narrate the feature, reading words written by Almendros throughout his lifetime.
The documentary is being produced by J.A. Bayona alongside Laurent Bouzereau, Belén Atienza, Markus Keith, and Óscar Romagosa. Speaking about the film, Bayona remarked that Almendros served as a profound source of inspiration. He noted that behind a discreet personality was an exceptional artist who transformed the understanding of light, as well as a courageous man committed to politics and the defense of LGBTQ+ rights.
Director Laurent Bouzereau echoed those sentiments, stating that Almendros stands at the crossroads of politics, cinema, and identity. Filming will take place over the course of several months across multiple international locations holding deep significance to the cinematographer's life, including Barcelona, Paris, London, New York, and Cuba.
The documentary's synopsis emphasizes that the film aims to reclaim both the visionary artist who helped reshape the language of cinema and the individual who stood firmly for freedom against the repressions of his era. With support from platforms like Movistar Plus, the project is set to introduce a new generation of viewers to the extraordinary life and timeless artistry of Almendros.
