Morocco and Belgium Compete for Standard Liege Winger Adnane Abid
The 23-year-old attacker has been named to Morocco's preliminary AFCON squad, prompting Belgium to counter with its own pitch.
The Moroccan national soccer team has ignited an international recruitment battle with Belgium after including Standard Liege winger Adnane Abid in its preliminary squad for upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The decisive move by the Atlas Lions has forced the Belgian soccer federation to confront an urgent choice regarding whether to include the 23-year-old attacker in the future plans of its senior national team.
Following Morocco's initial selection, the Belgian Football Association moved quickly to prevent the winger from committing elsewhere. According to a report by Belgian outlet Sudinfo, officials from the Belgian federation reached out directly to Abid in an effort to convince him to choose Belgium over Morocco for his international career. The outreach represents an eleventh-hour bid to keep a developing domestic talent under the Belgian flag.
The tug-of-war over Abid reflects an established pattern between the two nations. Over the past few seasons, Morocco has repeatedly succeeded in persuading dual-national players who are eligible for both countries to commit to the Atlas Lions. Belgium's Red Devils have recently missed out on high-profile prospects who chose Morocco instead, including Bilal El Khanouss and Chemsdine Talbi.
The situation has also raised questions within Belgian soccer concerning how the national team manages eligible prospects. Abid previously represented Belgium at the youth international level, playing for the country's under-19 squad in 2021. However, with years passing without further senior involvement, observers have questioned why Belgium allowed Morocco to force its hand rather than proactively integrating the winger into the Red Devils' pipeline.
Abid's international recruitment follows a major career step at the club level. In the summer of 2025, the attacker departed second-tier side Patro Eisden to sign with Standard Liege. During his final season with Patro Eisden, the winger demonstrated his offensive promise by scoring two goals and providing five assists across 35 appearances.
Since joining Standard Liege, Abid has elevated his productivity considerably, putting together a strong start to the season. Through his first 10 matches with the club, he has already recorded four goals and two assists, surpassing his entire goal tally from the previous campaign and establishing himself as a reliable attacking presence in Belgium's top division.
Because Abid is only 23 years old, his recent progress suggests he has room to develop even further on the pitch. That potential explains why Morocco moved aggressively to bring him into the fold ahead of AFCON qualifying play. With both Morocco and Belgium now actively presenting their cases, the final decision remains in the hands of the in-form winger.
