Military Fighter Jet Crashes in Northeastern France, Leaving at Least One Dead
Search operations are ongoing in rugged terrain for the second crew member following the nighttime training accident involving a Mirage 2000D aircraft.
A French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D fighter jet crashed late Tuesday evening in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department of northeastern France, resulting in at least one fatality and an intensive search for a missing crew member. The aircraft went down at approximately 10:40 p.m. near the locality of Rogéville, situated between the cities of Nancy and Metz, while returning from a training mission.
According to the Ministry of the Armed Forces, the two occupants of the dual-seat attack aircraft belonged to the 2/3 "Champagne" Fighter Squadron based at the Nancy-Ochey Air Base 133. Initial reports indicate that the jet experienced a sudden loss of radio and radar contact with the base before the crash occurred.
Emergency responders, including local gendarmerie, firefighters, and air force personnel, were immediately dispatched to the scene and established a crisis center in Rogéville. Rescuers recovered one body at the site, which is currently pending formal identification, while search efforts continued for the second crew member.
Severe weather conditions severely hampered the initial rescue operations. Yves Séguy, the prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle, stated during a press conference that heavy fog, darkness, and extremely poor weather prevented helicopters from safely surveying the steep and difficult-to-access area. Consequently, ground teams equipped with drones had to conduct all search procedures on foot.
Local officials warned residents and motorists of significant traffic disruptions in the sector encompassing Rogéville, Domèvre-en-Haye, and Tremblecourt as debris was mapped and investigated. Henry Lemoine, the mayor of nearby Pont-à-Mousson, noted that drone technology played a crucial role in locating scattered wreckage across the rural landscape.
Military officials confirmed that the flight crew consisted of an experienced weapons system officer and a young pilot undergoing instruction. David Pappalardo, spokesperson for the French Air and Space Force, indicated that at least one of the crew members was unable to eject from the aircraft prior to impact.
The Mirage 2000D is a twin-seat ground-attack aircraft that entered service in 1993 and has participated in numerous international conflicts over the past three decades. The air base in Nancy has previously experienced similar aviation tragedies, leading base commander Ludovic Humbert to describe the incident as a terrible shock to the military community.
Authorities have launched two separate investigations into the disaster: a safety investigation and a judicial inquiry to determine the exact circumstances and causes behind the crash.
