Authorities continue search efforts following the fatal maritime accident along the West African coastline.

At least 21 migrants lost their lives on Saturday evening when the wooden vessel carrying them capsized off the coast of Senegal. The tragic incident occurred approximately 180 kilometers north of the capital city, Dakar, near the coast of Lompoul in the Potou Saradao area.

While the exact number of passengers on board remains unknown, local authorities reported that 21 bodies had been recovered as search operations continued. Disagreements and uncertainties surround the exact casualty count and the total number of travelers, though officials noted that many more individuals were likely aboard.

The Senegalese Ministry of the Interior confirmed the updated death toll, noting that at least one person survived the shipwreck. Gendarmerie forces and firefighters were deployed to search the coastline for potential survivors and missing persons while extending support to the families of the victims.

Authorities believe the majority of the victims originated from the municipalities of Léona and Thiéppe within the Louga region. Meanwhile, some survivors reportedly fled through the coastal pine forest after the boat overturned, and officials are still verifying exact identities and hometowns.

Although the definitive destination of the vessel was not officially confirmed, officials and experts note it was likely headed toward Spain's Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The dangerous route has seen a significant increase in departures from West African nations, particularly Mali and Senegal, driven by organized smuggling networks.

The Senegalese Ministry of the Interior expressed deep condolences regarding the disaster and pledged to strengthen cooperation with neighboring countries. The government aims to intensify ongoing efforts to dismantle organized human trafficking rings operating across the region.

This devastating maritime tragedy highlights the persistent and severe risks associated with unauthorized sea migration along the West African transatlantic corridor toward the Canary Islands. Search and rescue teams maintain their presence along the northern coastline as investigations into the incident proceed.
