Michigan State Defeats Quinnipiac 96-59 in Season Opener
The sixth-ranked Spartans opened their 2026-27 basketball campaign with a dominant home victory led by Jeremy Fears Jr. and a strong supporting cast.
The sixth-ranked Michigan State basketball team kicked off the 2026-27 season with a dominant 96-59 victory over Quinnipiac at the Breslin Center. Led by junior point guard Jeremy Fears Jr., the Spartans controlled the contest from the opening minutes and never allowed the visitors back into the game.
Fears set the tone early by sinking a straightaway 3-pointer just 30 seconds into the matchup, finishing the night with a double-double consisting of 13 points and 11 assists. His performance helped orchestrate an efficient offense where six different Spartans scored in double figures, while two others finished close behind with nine points each.
Head coach Tom Izzo praised the balanced offensive distribution following the game. "If we can get everybody shots, that makes us harder to guard," Izzo said. "That will be one of the strengths as I look at the film tonight."
Michigan State was exceptionally efficient, shooting 58.1 percent from the field while holding Quinnipiac to just 35.7 percent. The Spartans also dominated in transition, outscoring the Bobcats 36-8 in fast-break points, and secured a 46-27 rebounding advantage after making interior boards a primary point of emphasis following the exhibition slate.
Several players stepped up to fill crucial roles for the Spartans. Senior transfer Anton Bonke, earning the start at center in place of the injured Jesse McCulloch, posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action. Meanwhile, freshman guard Carlos Medlock Jr. provided a major spark off the bench, contributing nine points and five assists during a crucial first-half surge.
Kaleb Glenn also made a strong impression in his official debut after missing the entire previous season with an injury, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to finish with 11 points. Despite the overwhelming success, the team acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly at the free-throw line, where the Spartans shot a concerning 57.7 percent by making 15 of 26 attempts.
The victory improved Michigan State to 1-0 on the young season and extended the program's impressive home-opener record. Looking ahead, the Spartans will return to their home court to face Toledo as they continue their challenging nonconference schedule.
