Miami Heat Debut New Roster Against Timberwolves in Season Opener
The Miami Heat host the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Kaseya Center, debuting marquee offseason acquisitions Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson.
The Miami Heat will launch their regular-season campaign on October 21 at the Kaseya Center, hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves in a high-profile matchup featuring two of the most active teams from the NBA off-season. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
Miami made waves across the league in July by securing two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Bucks. The major move sent four players, three first-round draft picks, a second-round selection, and a pick swap to Milwaukee in exchange for the 31-year-old superstar and power forward Bobby Portis.
Alongside Antetokounmpo, the Heat added veteran sharpshooter Klay Thompson to bolster their perimeter scoring. Thompson, now 36 years old, shot 38.3 percent from beyond the arc during the 2025-26 season and holds a career three-point shooting percentage of 40.9 percent. Although Thompson converted only three of his twenty three-point attempts during the preseason, Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra expressed confidence in the veteran guard's adjustment.
"I feel good about what he’s providing for us," Spoelstra said on October 18. "They’re going to have to defend [against] him a certain way, and I thought we have gotten him some good looks and shooters all go through that. He’s still getting his legs under him."
The Timberwolves enter the new campaign after a strong 49-33 season that concluded in the Western Conference semi-finals. Minnesota also reshaped its backcourt during the off-season, acquiring playmaker LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets in a four-team trade to pair alongside star guard Anthony Edwards, who averaged 28.8 points per game last year.
Despite the offensive firepower added on both sides, Minnesota head coach Chris Finch highlighted concerns regarding squad depth and rebounding following the departure of sixth-man standout Naz Reid. Meanwhile, Miami forward Bam Adebayo, who missed the final three preseason games due to groin soreness, returned to practice on October 18 and is anticipated to take the floor for the opener.
For local fans attending the game at the Kaseya Center, transportation options include the returning "Buzzer Beater" train service operated by Brightline, connecting travelers from Orlando, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Aventura to MiamiCentral Station.
