Meta Q3 Earnings Set to Test Wall Street Confidence in Heavy AI Spending
Meta Platforms kicks off Big Tech earnings season as investors scrutinize the financial impact of massive artificial intelligence investments.
Meta Platforms is scheduled to report its third-quarter financial results after the closing bell on Wednesday, marking the official kickoff for Big Tech earnings season. According to Bloomberg analyst consensus estimates, the company is expected to post earnings per share of $3.56 on $63.3 billion in revenue. This marks a significant increase from the $1.05 earnings per share and $51.2 billion in revenue reported during the same period last year.
Despite strong projected revenue growth, capital expenditures are anticipated to surge by 117% year over year to reach $41 billion. Furthermore, Meta's Reality Labs segment is projected to record an operating loss of $5.2 billion. These heavy expenditures reflect the tech giant's aggressive pivot toward artificial intelligence over the past year, drawing scrutiny from Wall Street regarding how quickly these investments will translate into meaningful returns.
Investor sentiment toward Meta has experienced notable fluctuations recently. The stock climbed approximately 25% in September during a historically sluggish month for equities, though it has since given back some of those gains. Over the past year, the company's financial metrics have felt the strain of its ambitious spending. In the second quarter, operating income dropped 8% year over year to $18.8 billion, net income declined 14% to $15.8 billion, and free cash flow plummeted 91% to $784 million, largely due to rising AI costs.
Despite market skepticism, recent commercial deployments suggest that Meta's artificial intelligence strategy is gaining operational traction. Last month, the company launched Muse, an AI agent capable of acting autonomously without manual prompts. The service quickly climbed to the top of the Apple App Store download charts for free iOS applications. Meta offers Muse for free within specific usage limits alongside a paid tier, and plans to monetize the tool further by charging retailers transaction fees when the AI agent assists shoppers in making purchases.
In addition to consumer applications, Meta has expanded Muse for small business utility and introduced advanced models such as Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full. These releases position Meta to compete directly with major private artificial intelligence developers like OpenAI and Anthropic. Meanwhile, the company's core advertising division remains robust, bolstered by automated tools for advertisers and algorithms designed to maintain user engagement across its platforms.
Beyond financial performance and product rollouts, Meta continues to navigate legal hurdles. In August, the company reached a settlement agreement with a bipartisan coalition of U.S. attorneys general regarding lawsuits over social media harm to younger users. Under the terms, Meta will pay roughly $12.7 billion over a ten-year period, with an additional $5.3 billion contingent on specific conditions, alongside implementing stricter guardrails for younger demographics. Analysts note that spreading the payments over a decade makes the settlement manageable for the tech leader.
As Wall Street awaits Wednesday's report, market participants will look closely for management commentary regarding user retention for Muse, monetization strategies, and the long-term outlook for capital expenditures. While some analysts argue that Meta shares are overvalued at 22.1 times forward earnings compared to an information technology sector average of 19.1 times, proponents maintain that the company's expanding artificial intelligence capabilities justify the premium for patient investors.
