Memory Chip Stocks Plunge as Kioxia Warns of Fading Flash Price Surge
Global semiconductor shares fell sharply after Japanese manufacturer Kioxia issued lower-than-expected guidance and warned that the artificial intelligence-driven boom in memory prices is decelerating.
Semiconductor stocks suffered a severe downturn across global markets following a disappointing financial forecast from Japanese memory chip maker Kioxia Holdings. Kioxia shares plunged by as much as 15% to reach their lowest levels in six months, dragging down major technology equities in the United States and Asia. The sell-off was triggered by concerns that the extraordinary pricing momentum driven by artificial intelligence demand in the memory sector is finally beginning to cool.
The warning from Kioxia rippled quickly through the broader memory supply chain. Sandisk shares tumbled more than 13% on Friday, October 30, despite the company having recently beaten its own financial guidance and reported strong results. The weakness also impacted other prominent technology firms, with Micron sliding over 5% and Intel plunging more than 28% following a weak fourth-quarter outlook tied to surging memory costs squeezing personal computer demand.
Kioxia projected an operating profit of 2 trillion yen, equivalent to about $12.7 billion, for the quarter ending in December. That forecast fell short of analyst expectations of 2.35 trillion yen and showed virtually no growth compared to the previous quarter ending in September. Management explained that some client orders had been pulled forward into September at customer request, while an increasing share of enterprise storage products required longer production times, delaying certain deliveries until March.
Despite the cautious near-term outlook, Kioxia executives maintained that overall demand from artificial intelligence data center operators remains robust. The company noted that its planned production capacity for next year is already completely sold out, with over half of its 2028 output booked and initial conversations underway regarding contracts stretching into 2029. Management emphasized that the softer guidance reflects delivery timing adjustments rather than a fundamental weakening of market demand.
However, financial analysts pointed out potential vulnerabilities stemming from Kioxia's business model. Unlike certain competitors that supply both NAND flash memory and DRAM chips, Kioxia focuses exclusively on NAND flash, which may leave the company with less commercial negotiating leverage. Furthermore, lofty market expectations and a widening gap between anticipated performance and actual supply-and-demand dynamics have added heavy pressure to tech valuations.
The sharp correction in semiconductor equities also heavily impacted major indices. In Japan, the Nikkei stock average faced downward pressure as the market absorbed the weak outlook from memory leaders. Meanwhile, technical analysts noted that Kioxia shares had breached key moving averages, leaving investors closely watching upcoming quarterly results to determine the trajectory of the broader technology sector.
