Formula 1 drivers Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson faced disciplinary action from race stewards after colliding during the second practice session at the Mexican Grand Prix. The on-track incident occurred when Verstappen attempted to pass Lawson near the stadium section of the circuit, leading to contact that damaged both vehicles.

The clash unfolded during FP2 as Verstappen was pushing on a fast lap after encountering minor technical issues earlier. He caught up to Lawson, who was driving slowly before reportedly accelerating as the Dutchman approached. Verstappen tried to make his way through at the entrance of Turn 12, but Lawson held his ground through subsequent turns, resulting in unnecessary contact that left Verstappen with a damaged floor.

Both drivers expressed frustration over the radio immediately following the incident. Lawson voiced his anger, stating that the Red Bull driver drove directly into him and questioning what he should do if he yielded every time. Meanwhile, Verstappen criticized Lawson's actions, arguing that the New Zealander accelerated when he saw him approaching and attempted to run him off the track.

Following the session, both drivers met with the stewards and admitted that their maneuvers were clumsy and unnecessary. The FIA determined that their behavior was unacceptable, noting that team managers had already been warned earlier in the day regarding similar aggressive driving tactics during practice.

Escalating the punishment from a standard formal warning, the FIA handed a one-place grid drop to both Verstappen and Lawson. In addition, each driver received one demerit point on their license, bringing Lawson's total to four and Verstappen's to one over a 12-month period.

Verstappen later remarked to the media that Lawson's driving was counterproductive, particularly given that Lawson is currently fighting to secure his future seat in Formula 1. Verstappen stated that picking a fight under such circumstances demonstrated poor judgment. Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane also weighed in on the situation, describing the collision as completely unnecessary and stating that both drivers are capable of performing better.

The incident added significant tension to the Red Bull family garage during a busy Grand Prix weekend. Both drivers will now have to overcome their respective grid penalties on Sunday as they aim to recover positions during the race.
