Madras High Court Issues Notice to Saurav Das Over Nationality and Judiciary Remarks
The court has asked the Union government and the Cockroach Janta Party convenor to respond to a petition questioning his background.
The Madras High Court has issued notices to the Union government and Cockroach Janta Party convenor Saurav Das regarding a petition that calls for an official investigation into his nationality and personal background. A division bench comprising Chief Justice SA Dharmadikari and Justice G Arul Murugan directed the respondents to submit their replies after reviewing the petition.
The legal challenge was brought forward by petitioner Ganesh Kumar, who identified Das as Yogesh Sharma alias Saurav Das. The petition asks the authorities to investigate the background details of both Das and his parents, and requests the cancellation of his Aadhaar card and passport if findings determine he holds foreign citizenship.
Additionally, the petitioner has asked the court to direct the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to block Das' social media accounts on platforms like X and Instagram. The plea accuses Das of making derogatory remarks against the judiciary and Supreme Court judges, and seeks an injunction to prevent him from making similar statements in the future.
During the court session, the petitioner's legal counsel presented various documents concerning Das' identity and residential addresses. The judges examined these records and requested clarification on several points raised in the documentation. The bench also questioned the circumstances surrounding the alleged statements directed at the judicial system.
When the bench inquired whether the petitioner had previously approached relevant authorities regarding the matter, the counsel confirmed that a formal representation had been submitted to the Central government on October 7, 2026, without receiving subsequent action. Consequently, the plea asks the court to mandate a timely review of that representation.
Saurav Das has previously maintained a visible public profile, having participated in demonstrations opposing the central government during the NEET protests, which led to the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He also took part in recent street demonstrations demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities during the special intensive revision process.
The Madras High Court has scheduled further proceedings in the case after six weeks, allowing the Union government and Das adequate time to formulate their responses to the allegations detailed in the petition.
