Belgian forward Lucas Stassin has opened up about his recent career trajectory following his loan move from AS Saint-Etienne to Spanish club Sevilla FC. The 21-year-old striker addressed his development and his recent omission from the senior national team in an interview with the Belgian daily newspaper Le Soir.

Reflecting on his previous time in Ligue 2 with Saint-Etienne, Stassin acknowledged that his competitive circumstances at the time did not warrant a call-up to the national team. He noted that playing in the French second tier meant he could not realistically compete with other established contenders for a roster spot.

"It was frustrating, but with Saint-Etienne, I was playing in Ligue 2. So I didn't have much to claim compared to my competitors," Stassin explained during the interview with Le Soir.

Since making the switch to Spain, Stassin has experienced a change of scenery and scenery adjustment. Sources differ slightly on his exact statistics following recent matches, with reports noting either one goal and one assist in six La Liga appearances, or one goal across seven matches, alongside a recent scoreless draw against Alaves.

Prior to the national team announcement, Stassin had expressed optimism about his chances with the Red Devils following his move to a top-tier Spanish club, stating his long-standing ambition to represent his country on the international stage. However, manager Mark Van Bommel ultimately chose other options for the senior squad, selecting Hugo Cuypers instead.

Despite missing out on the senior squad, Stassin will still have the opportunity to represent Belgium during the international break. He has been called up to play with the under-21 national team, known as the Diablotins, as they prepare to face matches against Germany and Italy.

Meanwhile, his temporary departure and potential future remain a significant financial talking point for Saint-Etienne. Sevilla holds a purchase option on the forward estimated at 25 million euros, which could result in a major financial windfall for the French club if exercised at the end of the loan agreement.
