Labor Unions Call for Mass General Strike in Morlaix Over Budget Plans

Inter-union coalition in Morlaix urges workers, retirees, and youth to participate in a nationwide day of action against government austerity.

Labor unions in Morlaix have announced plans for a large-scale general strike and street demonstration scheduled for Thursday, November 5, 2026. The call to action follows a national mobilization directive aimed at protesting the government's upcoming state and social security budget proposals for 2027.

A joint press release issued by the local inter-union coalition—which includes major labor organizations such as the CGT, CFDT, FSU, Solidaires, FO, CNT, and UNSA—criticized the administration's fiscal strategy. The coalition argued that the proposed budgets unfairly shift the financial burden onto working-class citizens, retirees, and individuals facing illness, rather than targeting major corporations and wealthy earners.

"With the state and social security budgets for 2027, the government wants to make employees, retirees, and the sick pay again, rather than large corporations and the ultra-rich. This is intolerable," the inter-union statement read.

Organizers noted that dissatisfaction extends beyond labor disputes, pointing to ongoing protests among students, high schoolers, and public service workers. These groups have participated in widespread demonstrations across France against the rising cost of living and government austerity measures.

The coalition also criticized national spending priorities, contending that increased funding for defense, security, and armaments is being allocated at the expense of vital public services and cultural institutions. They deemed these political choices unacceptable.

Emphasizing solidarity across generations and employment sectors, the Morlaix inter-union group concluded its announcement with a call to action: "Public, private, youth, precarious workers, and retirees, let us build it 'all together' to win!"

The upcoming strike on November 5 is expected to disrupt public services, transportation, and local businesses in the region as protesters voice their opposition to the national budgetary agenda.
