Kyle Larson Wins Wild Talladega NASCAR Race to Extend Chase Lead
Larson secured his first drafting-track victory in overtime after a dramatic finish marred by late multi-car crashes.
Kyle Larson captured a thrilling victory at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, winning the YellaWood 500 after a chaotic final-lap charge to the front. Entering the race as the leader in the 2026 NASCAR Chase, Larson extended his points lead significantly with just two races remaining in the season.
The victory marked Larson's second win in the Chase and his first-ever drafting-track triumph in 59 starts. Driving the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, Larson earned his career milestone despite falling back outside the top 10 on the final mile before roaring back through the field.
The race was defined by late-race drama, including two major multi-car wrecks that heavily impacted several drivers in the Chase standings. A terrifying 15-car pileup occurred with five laps remaining, halting the event under a red flag and sending three-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano airborne.
Logano's No. 22 Ford flipped over and landed on its roof after contact stemming from a push by Carson Hocevar. Safety crews worked quickly to right the vehicle, and Logano climbed out safely to cheers from the grandstands. Reflecting on the harrowing incident, Logano told reporters, "It was very much a 'Talladega Nights,' 'Oh no, I'm upside down, this is not good' moment. I can't thank the safety crew enough. They did an amazing job flipping that thing over."
The wreck also collected drivers such as Riley Herbst, whose Toyota appeared to lose brakes before striking the inside wall at full speed. Herbst, who missed the August Daytona race due to a concussion, exited his car with assistance and was later seen with a soft cast on his left hand and a wrapped wrist.
Following the red flag, the race proceeded into overtime, setting up a frantic sprint to the checkered flag. Larson nearly lost control coming out of turn two on the final lap, dropping to 11th place, but regained his momentum with drafting help from Ross Chastain and a shifting pack.
As the cars entered the tri-oval, William Byron tried to pass Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for the lead, but Larson blew past both of them to claim the victory. Byron finished second, securing a 1-2 finish for Hendrick Motorsports, while Alex Bowman rounded out the top ten in ninth place.
With the win and maximum stage points accumulated throughout the day, Larson expanded his narrow championship advantage significantly. He will head into the next event at Martinsville Speedway holding a commanding lead as he pursues his second consecutive Cup Series title.
