Kimi Antonelli made Formula 1 history on Sunday by becoming the youngest world champion of all time after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix. At 20 years and 68 days old, the Mercedes driver surpassed the previous record set by Sebastian Vettel in 2010. Antonelli entered the 71-lap race needing only to finish ninth to claim his maiden crown with four rounds remaining in the season.

The young Italian also became the first Italian world champion in 73 years, following in the footsteps of Giuseppe Farina and Alberto Ascari. "We did it, we did it. I wouldn't be here without Mercedes, without my family, so I'm very grateful for this moment and it's one that will live forever," Antonelli said after the race, adding that he was speechless and trying to process his achievement.

Out on the track, Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen claimed his third victory of the season after withstanding late pressure from Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen started fifth on the grid and capitalized on an intense opening-lap battle between polesitter Hamilton and Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc. After Leclerc received a five-second penalty for cutting the track, Verstappen took the lead and maintained it through a mid-race red flag and a late Safety Car restart, edging Hamilton by 0.799 seconds.

Hamilton expressed frustration following a heavy opening-lap collision with Leclerc that ultimately hampered his victory bid, stating they would need an internal explanation. Despite the missed opportunity for a second win of the season, Hamilton's second-place finish helped him climb in the drivers' standings, where he now sits second with 259 points, just ahead of Verstappen at 261 points.

The race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez featured substantial drama and interruptions, notably a heavy crash by Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas at Turn 1 on Lap 45 that caused a suspension failure and prompted a red flag due to barrier damage. Bottas extracted himself unaided and was taken to the medical center for precautionary checks. Later in the race, a collision between Oscar Piastri and rookie Arvid Lindblad triggered a final late Safety Car.

Following the restart with eight laps remaining, Verstappen held off Hamilton, while Antonelli secured his historic podium finish by passing Leclerc. Mercedes leads the constructors' championship with 630 points, holding a 126-point advantage over Ferrari. The Formula 1 season will continue with the Sao Paulo Grand Prix from November 6 to 8.
