Kansas State and Colorado face off in Boulder amid quarterback uncertainty

The longtime Big 12 rivals meet at Folsom Field as both programs attempt to recover from recent conference losses.

The Kansas State Wildcats and the Colorado Buffaloes are set to meet on Saturday in a historic Big 12 matchup at Folsom Field in Boulder. Both teams enter the Halloween weekend contest looking to reverse recent downward trends and secure a crucial conference victory.

Kansas State travels to Boulder dealing with significant injury issues at the quarterback position. Starting quarterback Avery Johnson has been ruled out for the second consecutive week after missing a recent road loss against Arizona State. Backup Jacob Knuth, who made his first career start in place of Johnson, has also been officially downgraded to out due to an ankle injury sustained during his fill-in duty.

With Knuth sidelined, Kansas State head coach Collin Klein is forced to turn deeper into his roster, leaving the Wildcats' starting duties to either Blake Barnett or Dillon Duff. Barnett appeared in four games last year primarily as a running quarterback and played briefly in the season opener before suffering an injury. Duff, a sophomore, has yet to appear in a college game after dealing with a preseason camp injury.

Colorado enters the contest aiming to break a five-game losing skid following a 57-24 defeat against Oklahoma State. The Buffaloes hold a 2-5 overall record and are still searching for their first conference win of the season under head coach Deion Sanders. Despite struggles on offense, Colorado quarterback Isaac Wilson accounted for all three scores in their previous outing, throwing for 280 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a score.

The Buffaloes have experienced difficulties establishing a consistent ground game this season, ranking near the bottom of the Big 12 in rushing yards. This has placed added pressure on their passing attack, which features standout wide receiver Joseph Williams. Williams surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for his career last week, recording his third 100-yard game of the season alongside teammate DeAndre Moore Jr.

Historically, the matchup carries a long-standing rivalry dating back to 1912, marking the 69th meeting between the programs. Kansas State currently holds a two-game winning streak in the series, though Colorado leads the overall matchup historically and boasts a strong home record against the Wildcats in Boulder.

Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. MT, with the game broadcast nationally on TNT. As both teams navigate roster challenges and seek to revitalize their seasons, Saturday's outcome will heavily influence their trajectory for the remainder of the Big 12 schedule.
