Federal Judge Jesse Furman ruled that the dismissal of US prosecutor Maurene Comey was unlawful and ordered her reinstatement to her position at a New York court, according to court documents. Alongside returning to her post, Comey is entitled to receive back pay.

Comey was dismissed by the US Department of Justice in July 2025 without any publicly stated reason. Prior to her firing, she was involved in high-profile federal criminal cases, including prosecutions against convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and Sean "Diddy" Combs.

The legal case has also drawn broader political attention due to her family background. Maurene Comey is the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, whom President Donald Trump fired in May 2017 amid investigations into potential links between Russia and his presidential campaign team. The relationship between Trump and the elder Comey has since been defined by intense conflict and frequent public attacks, though the court ruling did not establish a legal connection between this political friction and his daughter's termination.

Simultaneously, Democratic lawmakers in the US House of Representatives have escalated their demands for an independent investigation into Trump's historical connections to Epstein. Staff members on the House Judiciary Committee released a report alleging that growing evidence points toward Trump's active involvement in Epstein's sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s.

These allegations stand separate from established judicial facts and the employment ruling regarding Comey. President Trump has consistently denied any participation in Epstein's criminal activities or prior knowledge of them.

Legal experts note that the decision regarding Maurene Comey addresses solely her employment status as a federal prosecutor. It carries no judicial evaluation of the separate political allegations surrounding the president and Epstein.
