Joe Miñoso Departs Chicago Fire After 15 Seasons
The actor bids farewell to his character, firefighter Joe Cruz, during the hit drama's landmark 300th episode.
Original cast member Joe Miñoso is leaving the popular drama Chicago Fire after playing firefighter Joe Cruz for 15 seasons. The milestone 300th episode serves as the final appearance for the character, who has been a central part of Firehouse 51 since the show's pilot.
The groundwork for Miñoso's departure was laid at the start of the season following a massive warehouse fire from the previous finale. The dangerous rescue left Cruz with a fractured spine, rendering him physically unable to continue working as an active firefighter. Reflecting on the storyline, Miñoso admitted he initially felt shocked when learning about his character's fate and exit from the ensemble cast.
"I remember I was sitting in the producers' office and I was staring at all of the headshots in the room, and I just kept looking at my picture and recognizing that it would no longer be in the mix of the ensemble [with my exit]," Miñoso said. "And it was hard to hear at first, but at the same time, I really understood it."
During the development of his exit arc, Miñoso collaborated with the writing team and showrunner Victor Teran. The actor shared that he provided input by recalling long-running storylines and continuity details from the beginning of the series that newer staff members might have overlooked.
The 300th episode centers heavily on the theme of family and features an emotional farewell between Cruz and Lieutenant Kelly Severide, played by Taylor Kinney. Miñoso noted that the poignant moment between the two colleagues was the final scene shot for his character, describing it as highly emotional and unique for the series.
Cruz's departure also brings an end to the storylines of two recurring characters tied to his family life: his wife Chloe Allen, played by Kristen Lee Gutoskie, and their adopted son Javi, played by Carlos S. Sanchez. Their exits conclude a multi-season narrative highlighting the emotional journey of adoption.
Although Miñoso is hanging up his turnout gear as an actor on the series, he will return to the set later in the season in a behind-the-scenes capacity to direct an upcoming episode. Having spent months shadowing directors, Miñoso expressed immense gratitude for the opportunities the show has provided throughout his historic run.
