Ja Morant Debuts Strong for Trail Blazers Alongside Damian Lillard
Despite initial skepticism from analysts like Charles Barkley, the Portland backcourt shined in a blowout victory over the Phoenix Suns.
Ja Morant made a successful debut with the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday, helping lead his new team to a commanding 124-83 victory over the Phoenix Suns at the Moda Center. Despite questions surrounding his health leading up to the opener, Deni Avdija joined Morant in the starting lineup alongside Damian Lillard, Toumani Camara, and Donovan Clingan.
Ahead of the matchup, analysts such as Charles Barkley voiced strong doubts about whether Morant and Lillard could share the floor effectively. Barkley famously criticized the fit on television, stating that the backcourt pairing consisted of two small players who both require the ball and would struggle defensively against elite NBA guards.
However, the opening night performance quickly quieted at least some of those early concerns. Morant logged 14 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and three steals in just 23 minutes of action, shooting efficiently by making six of eight shots from the field, including two from beyond the arc.
The Trail Blazers set an aggressive tone right from the opening tip, overwhelming the Suns to take a massive 43-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. That early surge turned the remainder of the contest into a lopsided affair, allowing Portland to coast comfortably through the second half.
Prior to the game, questions lingered regarding Portland's starting rotation, especially after Avdija appeared on the injury report as questionable with an ankle injury. Speculation suggested that first-year head coach Micah Nori might experiment with a three-guard starting combination involving Lillard, Morant, and Jrue Holiday, or possibly bring Morant off the bench.
Instead, the coaching staff opted to start Morant alongside Lillard and Avdija, a decision that paid immediate dividends on the floor. While the blowout nature of the game makes it difficult to fully evaluate how the tandem will fare against tougher competition, the duo easily passed the initial eye test.
As the season progresses, head coach Micah Nori will have decisions to make regarding rotation depth, particularly with players like Toumani Camara providing solid support and backup options like Vít Krejčí and Sidy Cissoko waiting in the wings. Nevertheless, Morant appears firmly entrenched in the opening unit for the foreseeable future as Portland looks to build on its dominant start.
