Italy Faces Nationwide Transport Strikes and General Walkouts in November

A wave of labor protests involving railway workers, public transit operators, and public sector employees will impact travel and services across Italy throughout November.

A series of labor strikes is set to sweep across Italy this November, causing significant disruptions across multiple sectors, with public transportation and railways facing the most immediate impact. The wave of demonstrations begins early in the month and builds toward a sweeping general strike later in November, affecting public services, telecommunications, and regional transit systems.

The first major transportation disruption is scheduled for Monday, November 9, 2026. Railway personnel employed by Italo Ntv have announced a nationwide strike protesting what labor unions describe as a failure to renew collective bargaining agreements that have been expired for nearly two years. According to union representatives, the mobilization stems from "unmet wage increases, an inadequate contract renewal, and the need for regulatory improvements for onboard crews alongside solutions for station personnel salary issues."

While the railway stoppage for most participating unions is planned from 9:01 AM to 4:59 PM, other labor groups like Uilt-Uil have called for a full-day work stoppage for operational crew members. In response to the labor action, Italo has published a list of guaranteed services, ensuring that 41 out of 120 scheduled trains will continue to operate. Passengers seeking additional information can contact the company's dedicated customer service line.

The protests on November 9 extend beyond national rail networks. In Genoa, workers represented by the Ost Cub Trasporti union at the local public transit company Amt will stage a four-hour strike from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Additional labor actions are scheduled for November 11, when telecommunications workers across the country participate in a full-day national strike called by major industry unions.

A broader nationwide general strike is officially scheduled for Friday, November 20, 2026. This extensive mobilization will involve numerous public and private sector employees, touching critical areas such as education, universities, public research, healthcare, central and local government administrations, independent authorities, the Prime Minister's Office, special-statute regions, autonomous provinces, and the national fire brigade.

Within the education sector, the strike will impact teachers, school principals, and administrative, technical, and auxiliary personnel. Meanwhile, the transportation sector will face renewed disruptions as railway and rail freight personnel halt operations for 23 hours, starting at 9:00 PM on November 20 and ending at 8:00 PM on November 21.

Local public transit systems will also experience widespread interruptions on November 21. Workers in this sector plan to strike for their entire shifts, though operations will remain subject to mandatory minimum service time bands to accommodate essential commuter travel. Authorities advise travelers and citizens to monitor official announcements closely as the dates approach.
