Italian Army in the News: Paratroopers Deployed to Milan and Arrest in Naples
Recent events highlight the Italian Army through a major security deployment in Milan and an unexpected arrest following a traffic accident near Naples.
The Italian Army has recently drawn significant public attention following two distinct developments involving domestic security operations and law enforcement actions. In Milan, approximately 500 paratroopers from the Folgore Brigade are arriving to support local law enforcement agencies in maintaining public order following recent disturbances and violent clashes in the Lombardy capital. Meanwhile, in Somma Vesuviana near Naples, an off-duty 45-year-old soldier belonging to the Italian Army was arrested after carabinieri discovered three incendiary devices inside his vehicle following a traffic collision.
The deployment of the Folgore paratroopers to Milan comes in response to heightened security concerns after recent demonstrations resulted in property damage and clashes with police. According to authorities, the 500 elite soldiers will operate alongside roughly 5,000 members of the regular police forces to strengthen territorial control, secure sensitive targets, and conduct joint patrols. Officials emphasized that the military personnel will not assume police investigation powers, but will assist civil authorities through static surveillance, infrastructure monitoring, and preventive patrols similar to previous national security operations.
Interior Minister Piantedosi addressed the deployment, explaining that the specific duties of the paratroopers will be coordinated by the local prefect and the police commissioner based on operational needs. The military units are authorized to carry out patrols, monitor transportation hubs, and use their weapons if necessary, while allowing police and carabinieri to concentrate their resources on public order management. This reinforcement forms part of broader governmental measures to crack down on violent protests and public disorder.
In a separate incident in Southern Italy, a routine traffic accident in Somma Vesuviana unexpectedly turned into a criminal investigation involving a member of the armed forces. Carabinieri responding to a collision between a Toyota and a Fiat Panda discovered three Molotov cocktails inside the Japanese vehicle driven by a 45-year-old army sergeant. One of the incendiary bottles had broken during the impact, another was partially emptied, and a third was reportedly ready for use.
The discovery prompted an immediate response from the bomb squad of the provincial carabinieri command in Naples, who secured the area to ensure public safety. The military driver, who sustained injuries during the crash, was transported to a local hospital in Nola and discharged shortly thereafter with a ten-day medical prognosis. The couple traveling in the other vehicle escaped uninjured and were confirmed to be entirely unconnected to the presence of the explosive material.
Following medical treatment, the soldier was arrested on charges of illicit possession of explosive material and transferred to Poggioreale prison in Naples. The case has been handed over to the Public Prosecutor's Office in Nola, which has launched an investigation to determine the origin of the incendiary bottles, the motives behind transporting them, and their intended destination. Authorities stated that investigations are ongoing to establish the full context of the incident.
In other military activities, the Italian Army also recently marked community engagement and historical traditions with the inauguration of the 23rd edition of the Flik Flok sports and social event in Caserta. Organized by the Garibaldi Bersaglieri Brigade, the event welcomed over 6,000 students from regional schools. The opening ceremony included the official return of the 8th Bersaglieri Regiment from a six-month deployment in Bulgaria, highlighting the diverse roles played by the Italian military both in international missions and national community outreach.
