India and New Zealand Prepare for Five-Match ODI Series
Head coach Gautam Gambhir addresses team pressure and preparation concerns as senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return for the 50-over matches.
India and New Zealand are shifting their focus to a five-match ODI series following the conclusion of their T20 international matches. New Zealand won the final T20I in Hamilton by seven wickets, preventing a clean sweep and bringing the final series score to 3-2 in favor of India. Tim Seifert starred for the hosts with a blistering 93 runs off 50 balls, chasing down India's target of 191 in just 18 overs.
Despite dropping the final two matches of the T20I leg, India head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed immense satisfaction with how his squad handled the demanding early stretch of the tour. Arriving in New Zealand after a 15-hour flight with only one practice session before the opening match, the visitors managed to secure the series victory in the first three games.
Addressing reporters after the match in Hamilton, Gambhir dismissed concerns about pressure and a demanding international schedule. "There is no word like 'dar' [fear] in my dictionary and directory," Gambhir said. Acknowledging that the intense workload can be mentally draining, he added, "I am ready to take the bullet… it gets tough. I am also human but I am up for the challenge and that's my job."
Gambhir also voiced significant criticism regarding the scheduling and lack of adequate preparation time provided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and international fixtures. Pointing to the upcoming red-ball fixtures, he argued that a three-day window to prepare for Test matches is insufficient. "Planning is done at BCCI level. Prioritising is important. Every match for country is important," Gambhir noted, stating that eight to nine days of red-ball preparation would be ideal.
As the focus shifts to the 50-over format, the upcoming ODI series marks the return of veteran stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both players remain central figures in India's long-term plans heading toward the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. During recent training sessions, the duo displayed a relaxed and cheerful demeanor, generating significant attention from fans and media alike.
Rohit, who has retired from T20Is and Test matches, will feature across all five ODIs against New Zealand. The opening match of the series is scheduled to begin at Eden Park, with veteran leadership expected to bolster the squad as they transition away from the fast-paced action of the shortest format.
For New Zealand, captain Mitchell Santner and his team will look to carry the momentum from their victories in Auckland and Hamilton into the ODI matches. Although they ultimately lost the T20I series, the hosts demonstrated their capabilities in the closing games and hope to maintain that competitive edge in the upcoming fifty-over contests.
