Hyrox Champion Joanna Wietrzyk Returns to Competition After Viral Incident
The elite athlete is heading back to the race floor in Hamburg following weeks of reflection and criticism over a controversial event in Beijing.
Hyrox world champion Joanna Wietrzyk is preparing to return to competitive racing in Hamburg, Germany, marking her first appearance since a viral controversy in Beijing last month. The 24-year-old athlete announced her comeback via an Instagram video, stating that she is ready to return to the Elite 15 division after spending the past six to eight weeks reflecting on the fallout from the September event.
During the women's Pro competition in Beijing on September 12, Wietrzyk suffered sudden bowel incontinence due to a bacterial infection brought on by food poisoning. Despite becoming ill on the course and experiencing visible contamination, she chose to continue racing and ultimately crossed the finish line first with a time of one hour, one minute, and 23 seconds before being taken to a hospital.
Footage of the incident spread rapidly across social media, sparking intense debate and severe backlash from spectators and fellow competitors alike. Critics raised serious concerns regarding hygiene, sportsmanship, and the potential health risks posed to other athletes who shared the same equipment during the indoor fitness competition.
In her recent video, Wietrzyk offered a sincere apology to everyone affected by her decision to keep racing. "I've had some time to reflect over the past six to eight weeks on everything that happened in Beijing, and firstly I just want to say that I'm truly, truly so sorry to everyone that I affected, whether they were spectators or participants out on that race floor, for my decision to choose to continue to race," she said.
Reflecting on the event in an interview with the BBC, Wietrzyk admitted that her intense competitive drive clouded her judgment. "I didn't really think about the people around me... Looking back, the decision I made was the wrong decision, and I'm truly sorry for everyone that I hurt," she acknowledged, adding that she initially went into a fight-or-flight mode while recovering in the hospital.
Following the initial online uproar, Wietrzyk posted a since-deleted selfie with the caption "a win is a win," which drew further criticism. She later deleted the post, issued a formal apology on September 17, and retroactively withdrew her result and forfeited her victory points. She also revealed that the intense online backlash, which included threats directed at her and her family, made the period deeply traumatic and caused her to contemplate walking away from the sport entirely.
Hyrox co-founder Moritz Fürste also addressed the incident, issuing a public apology and conceding that organizers should have intervened immediately. In response to the controversy, the organization updated its rules to empower race directors to remove competitors from the course whenever blood, vomit, urine, or feces create health or safety hazards for others.
As she prepares for her upcoming race in Hamburg, Wietrzyk expressed hope that the incident will not define her career moving forward. Despite the temporary setback, she remains one of the sport's top competitors, having established world-record performances and secured podium finishes at previous Hyrox World Championships.
