An aerial collision involving two helicopters near the Mount Everest base camp on the Nepali side resulted in the death of one tourist and left another passenger injured. The tragic incident occurred at an altitude of 4,371 meters just moments before both aircraft were scheduled to land.

According to a local police official, an Indian tourist died in the crash, while a passenger from New Zealand aboard the same helicopter sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital in Kathmandu. The pilots of both helicopters managed to escape safely, though one pilot reportedly suffered injuries as well, as noted by local media reports.

Footage from the scene captured the moment the rotor blades of one helicopter struck the fuselage of the other just feet above the ground. Both aircraft had approached from opposite directions, attempting to touch down simultaneously on a designated snow and ice landing zone. Following the impact, both helicopters came to rest with severe damage.

The accident took place in Pheriche, a popular waypoint utilized by trekkers and mountaineers journeying toward the Everest base camp. This location serves as both a destination for trekking excursions and the departure point for expeditions aiming to scale the summit of the world's highest mountain.

While the exact cause of the collision remains under investigation, official reports suggest that a communication breakdown between the two pilots may have contributed to the accident. The incident has reignited an ongoing debate surrounding the prevalence of scenic helicopter flights in the Everest region.

For years, local communities and helicopter tour operators have engaged in heated discussions regarding these flights. Local residents argue that the increasing volume of air traffic poses a significant threat to the delicate local ecosystem. Conversely, supporters maintain that these costly flights are vital for sustaining the local tourism market.
