Harry Kane Lents Tension Surrounding Upcoming 2026 Ballon d'Or Ceremony
The Bayern Munich striker admitted that the prolonged wait for the winner's announcement creates significant stress for his family.
England captain and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has opened up about the mounting anxiety he and his family are experiencing ahead of the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony. The prestigious event is scheduled to take place on Monday at the London Palladium, where the world's best player for the year will be officially crowned.
Kane, who is 33 years old and currently ranks among the leading contenders for the award, shared his thoughts following Bayern Munich's 2-2 draw against Arsenal in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena. During the match, Kane provided an assist for Alphonso Davies and successfully converted a penalty kick, securing recognition as the standout performer of the game.
Speaking about the suspense leading up to the ceremony, Kane noted that the prolonged wait generates considerable tension at home. "I think my wife would prefer to know and my family, it’s very stressful for everyone. I can see why they don’t tell people. They want everyone to go, all the big names there and there will be more people watching it if they don’t know so I can understand why," Kane stated.
The English forward acknowledged the event organizers' rationale for keeping the results confidential to boost viewership and attendance. However, he admitted a personal preference for earlier notification. "From my perspective, naturally I would welcome knowing the result to avoid the tension throughout the entire evening," he said. "However, this determination rests with them, and I cannot influence that outcome. We shall simply endeavor to appreciate the occasion and attempt to minimize unnecessary worry."
Kane has enjoyed a stellar run of form for Bayern Munich this season, recording 10 goals and providing seven assists across 11 appearances. His impressive performances have firmly placed him in the conversation for global football's highest individual honor alongside fellow favorite Lamine Yamal of Barcelona.
Meanwhile, former Bayern and Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski weighed in on the race for the Ballon d'Or. While praising Kane's prolific scoring ability and his impact since arriving at the club in his prime, Lewandowski voiced support for young Barcelona standout Lamine Yamal. Lewandowski remarked that Kane fills the exact role Bayern missed following his own departure, forming a formidable partnership alongside teammates Michael Olise and Luis Díaz.
