Harry Kane Claims Ballon d'Or as Barcelona Phenom Lamine Yamal Looks to Future
The Bayern Munich striker secured soccer's top prize in London, sparking reactions across Europe and from Barcelona's camp.
Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane was awarded the Ballon d'Or at a ceremony in London, ending a 25-year wait for an English recipient while edging out Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal. The 33-year-old striker became the first Bayern Munich player to capture the prestigious individual honor since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. The accolade followed a prolific 2025–26 campaign in which Kane netted 73 goals across all competitions, spearheaded Bayern's domestic treble, and captained England to a third-place finish at the World Cup.
Speaking after the gala, Kane credited his 2023 move from Tottenham Hotspur to Germany for elevating his performance to new heights. "Making the move to Bayern Munich was a big step in my career. Some people saw it as a risk, but for me it was always about improving," Kane said, adding that training alongside elite talent in Bavaria pushed him to another level. Since joining the club for an initial fee of approximately €100 million, Kane has scored 156 goals in 159 appearances, securing two Bundesliga titles and the German Cup.
Bayern officials expressed pride in the triumph, with club president Herbert Hainer declaring that the organization and Kane have reached the pinnacle of world soccer together. Capitalizing on this success, the German club is currently working to finalize a contract extension for the striker. Reports indicate that the new agreement aims to remove an existing matching-rights clause held by Tottenham Hotspur, which would effectively eliminate the possibility of a return to the English Premier League.
In Catalonia, 19-year-old Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal responded to his runner-up finish with public optimism, congratulating the winners while stating his intent to capture the honor in the future. Yamal, who collected the Young Talent of the Year award for the third consecutive time, wrote on social media: "IT WILL COME, good things take time, I trust the path I'm building." The Spanish forward reiterated that his primary focus remains on leading Barcelona back to major trophies, despite event footage showing both him and Mbappé remaining seated rather than shaking Kane's hand after the announcement.
The outcome also provoked outspoken criticism from Yamal's family and pundits in Spain. Yamal's uncle Abdul voiced strong disagreement on Spanish radio network Cadena SER, insisting that his nephew was the best player in the world and claiming voters favored Kane because the veteran striker has limited time remaining in his career. Additionally, former Real Madrid midfielder Guti questioned whether shifting the 70th-anniversary ceremony to London was orchestrated to favor an English winner, though organizers noted the English venue was chosen specifically to honor inaugural recipient Sir Stanley Matthews.
France Football editor-in-chief Vincent Garcia emphasized that the final outcome was determined by an exceedingly tight margin. According to Garcia, Mbappé led the balloting for much of the voting period before Kane staged a late surge. The final point differential between Kane and Mbappé proved to be even narrower than the 41-point gap between Rodri and Vinícius Júnior in the 2024 vote, illustrating how close the race was among the finalists.
With the current campaign underway, the rivalry between the European giants shows no signs of slowing down. Barcelona has enjoyed strong form under head coach Hansi Flick with contributions from Yamal, Brazilian winger Raphinha, and Spanish midfielder Rodri. Meanwhile, Bayern continues to lean on Kane and French playmaker Michael Olise, ensuring that both clubs remain central to the ongoing race for individual and team silverware.
