Galatasaray Defeats Lille as European Action Heats Up
Galatasaray overcame an early deficit to secure a 4-2 victory against Lille in a high-scoring Champions League encounter.
Galatasaray secured a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Lille in France during Wednesday's Champions League fixtures, bouncing back after surrendering an early lead. The Turkish side's win formed part of a packed slate of European matches that featured major victories for traditional powerhouses and surprising results for underdogs.
The match in France began with early excitement when Yunus Akgun put the visitors ahead shortly after kickoff. However, Lille responded quickly as Soriba Diaoune netted an equalizer five minutes later and then scored again in the 39th minute to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
Galatasaray fought back before halftime, with Alexey Batrakov heading home an equalizer in the 44th minute. Shortly after the break, Lucas Torreira redirected a corner kick into the net, an effort later credited as an own goal by Nabil Bentaleb. Victor Osimhen capped the scoring nine minutes later with a powerful strike from the edge of the box against one of his former clubs.
At the top of the Champions League standings, Paris Saint-Germain, Aston Villa, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Real Betis maintained perfect records with three wins from three matches. Aston Villa claimed the second spot in the league phase standings following a 3-1 victory over Norwegian club Viking, supported by goals from Ross Barkley, Emiliano Buendia, and Alysson.
Elsewhere in Europe, Real Madrid cruised to a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu. Bernardo Silva opened the scoring just before halftime, while Arda Guler, Kylian Mbappe, and substitute Yan Diomande added goals to seal the win, despite a brief response from Leipzig's Tidiam Gomis.
In contrast, Manchester United suffered a bruising 4-1 defeat against competition newcomer Como in northern Italy. Nico Paz starred for Como with two goals and an assist, leaving United mired in trouble and coach Michael Carrick under intense pressure following the lopsided loss.
Other notable results included Inter Milan edging Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 despite a red card to Alessandro Bastoni, Real Betis defeating Feyenoord 1-0 behind a penalty from Isco, and Austrian champion LASK stunning Sporting Lisbon 3-2 to secure its first victory in the tournament.
