Former Swindon Teacher Banned for Life After Relationship with Pupil

A former high school teacher in Swindon, England, has been permanently banned from the profession following an investigation into professional misconduct involving a student. Mark Fletcher, who taught at Ridgeway School and Sixth Form College, crossed strict professional boundaries by initiating inappropriate contact, sending late-night emails, and eventually entering into a sexual relationship with the pupil after she left the institution.

The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) convened a professional conduct panel to review the allegations. The panel heard that Fletcher began contacting the student using his personal email address during July and August 2019, frequently during the early hours of the morning. In his messages, he wrote statements such as, "You have had a real effect on me," and told her that it was "rare to meet someone who changes who you are."

Evidence presented to the panel detailed an incident on August 30, 2019, when Fletcher drove to the student's home at approximately 1:00 a.m. The pupil snuck out to meet him, and the two spoke outside until around 6:00 a.m. During this encounter, Fletcher asked her, "You're not gonna tell anyone are you?" and remarked that he trusted her after she responded in the negative. The panel concluded that these actions demonstrated a clear intention to develop an inappropriate romantic relationship while she was still a student under his purview.

The student stated that their interactions initially involved emotional conversations and hugs before the student departed from the school. By December 2019, the relationship escalated into sexual activity, with the pair meeting late at night inside Fletcher's car. The matter came to light in June 2023 when the former student reported the relationship to school administration.

Following the disclosure, Ridgeway School took immediate action by suspending Fletcher in July 2023 and subsequently terminating his employment in October 2023. Local authorities and the police were notified, and law enforcement agencies conducted an investigation, though no formal criminal charges or further legal action were pursued.

Fletcher chose not to attend the TRA hearing and disputed all allegations brought against him. Nevertheless, the independent panel found all six allegations proven, determining that his behavior was sexually motivated, dishonest, and constituted a severe breach of the trust placed in educators. The panel concluded that his conduct amounted to unacceptable professional conduct that fell significantly short of professional standards.

In a formal decision, the TRA imposed an indefinite prohibition order, banning Fletcher from teaching in any schools, sixth form colleges, or other settings involving children in England, with no right to apply to have the restriction lifted. School leadership, including Headteacher Helen Buttery and Executive Headteacher Adrian Cush, addressed parents and carers in a letter acknowledging that the findings could cause distress while reiterating that student safety remains the top priority of the educational community.
