Former Motorcycle Champion Loris Reggiani Auctions Aprilia 250 for Emergency
The former racing star parted ways with a prized replica of his Grand Prix machine to support international humanitarian relief efforts.
Former motorcycle racing champion Loris Reggiani has auctioned off a valuable replica of his Aprilia 250 Grand Prix motorcycle to raise funds entirely dedicated to the activities of the humanitarian organization Emergency. The racing legend, a winner of eight Grands Prix and a two-time 250cc world runner-up, decided to put the machine up for auction out of a sense of personal conscience.
The competitive bidding among passionate collectors was ultimately won by Confesercenti di Forlì. "As a Western citizen, I am ashamed of how we are treating the many genocides that consume us in the world," Reggiani explained regarding his motivation. "My gesture is a drop in an ocean of need, but my conscience requires it of me."
Giancarlo Corzani, director of Confesercenti Forlì, noted that they did not hesitate to acquire the motorcycle once they learned of Reggiani's initiative. The vehicle is slated to be proudly displayed at their headquarters. Emergency, founded in Italy in 1994 by Gino Strada to provide free and quality medical care to victims of war and poverty, operates hospitals across 21 countries and has assisted over 14 million people to date.
Nicola Ciano, head of fundraising for Emergency, expressed deep gratitude for the donation. "We are happy and moved by this extraordinary initiative," Ciano stated, adding that while the exact destination of the funds has not yet been finalized, the contribution will be put to optimal use across their numerous global projects.
Reggiani holds a notable place in motorcycle racing history as the first rider to steer Aprilia to victory in the Motorcycle World Championship. Beyond his racing achievements, his recent charitable auction has drawn widespread attention from motorsport enthusiasts and supporters of humanitarian causes alike.
The successful auction underscores the enduring connection between racing icons and philanthropic initiatives, as former sports stars leverage their legacies to aid vulnerable populations worldwide through established organizations like Emergency.
