Ford Details Pricing, Production, and Features for Upcoming Fathom EV
The automaker revealed new details regarding its upcoming affordable electric pickup, including advanced bidirectional charging and manufacturing techniques.
Ford has shared comprehensive details regarding its upcoming Fathom electric pickup, positioning the vehicle as a major milestone in affordable electric vehicle manufacturing. Set to start at $28,350 before a $1,595 destination charge, the midsize truck will offer a competitive entry point when it launches. Andrew Frick, president of Ford Blue and Model e, noted during an earnings call that the vehicle pricing will extend into the high $30,000 range for higher-end configurations.
CEO Jim Farley praised the vehicle following a personal test drive, highlighting its acceleration, interior space, and advanced driver assistance systems. Production of the Fathom is scheduled to begin at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, with pre-orders expected to open early next year and deliveries slated for late 2027. The vehicle utilizes Ford's Universal EV Platform and features a rear-mounted motor paired with a lithium iron phosphate battery pack.
A key engineering innovation of the Fathom involves its structural foundation. Vladimir Bogachuk, Ford's chief engineer for advanced vehicle structure architecture, announced that the company has cast more than 5,000 large aluminum unicastings at its Shelbyville Technical Center. These front and rear components replace 146 separate structural parts, significantly reducing mass and improving energy efficiency while utilizing a modular repairability approach.
Beyond its structural design, the Fathom will introduce robust bidirectional charging capabilities. The truck features an integrated inverter housed within its electrical system, eliminating the need for a separate wall-mounted inverter for home power delivery. The system is designed to supply more than 10 kilowatts of alternating current power to a home, functioning as an emergency backup during power outages or as a smart energy management tool to reduce electricity costs during peak pricing hours.
To facilitate home integration, Ford plans to offer a Home Power Station and a Home Backup Power Panel. Company estimates suggest the combined hardware will cost approximately $2,255 before installation and subscription fees. Furthermore, Ford has established a working group with major utility companies including American Electric Power, BC Hydro, Consumers Energy, Exelon, and Pacific Gas and Electric to streamline regulatory and connection processes.
Inside the cabin, the Fathom will integrate advanced digital features, including embedded Apple Maps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and BlueCruise hands-free driving capabilities. Leadership indicated that the digital suite and subscription services represent significant long-term growth opportunities for recurring revenue, noting that software integration helps improve customer retention.
Looking beyond the pickup, Ford plans to utilize its new Universal EV Platform for additional models. Industry reports indicate that a fully electric crossover based on the platform, reviving the Escape nameplate, could enter production at the Louisville facility in 2029. Meanwhile, final specifications and regulatory approvals for the Fathom will be confirmed as the production launch approaches.
