The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a series of severe roadway incidents across Orange County and South Florida, ranging from fatal construction zone collisions to serious DUI arrests. Troopers have emphasized the ongoing dangers faced by first responders and motorists on busy state corridors.

Early Friday morning, all eastbound lanes of State Road 408 in Orange County were temporarily shut down near mile marker 1 following a fatal crash. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2021 Dodge Charger driven by a 48-year-old Orlando man collided with the back of a stationary construction truck parked for an active lane closure with an operating light board.

Following the impact, the driver of the Charger exited the vehicle and began yelling before the construction truck driver left briefly to notify nearby law enforcement. Upon returning to the scene, the construction worker found the motorist slumped over the steering wheel inside the car. Authorities confirmed the driver died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while the construction worker sustained minor injuries.

Just days prior, another major collision on State Road 429 left a Florida Highway Patrol trooper and a motorist seriously injured. The crash occurred late Tuesday night in the southbound lanes near mile marker 6 in the Bay Lake area, when a Toyota Tundra driven by a 53-year-old Davenport man struck the rear of a marked FHP cruiser.

Officials stated that the trooper was inside the vehicle with emergency lights activated while managing a lane closure for an active construction zone. The trooper was airlifted to HCA Osceola Regional Medical Hospital and remains in stable condition, while the driver of the Tundra was transported to Celebration Hospital with serious injuries.

Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Dave Kerner released a statement highlighting the inherent dangers of roadway operations and the importance of compliance with Florida's Move Over Law. Troopers noted that over 17,000 citations were issued in 2025 for violations of the law, which requires motorists to change lanes or slow down for stopped emergency and construction vehicles.

In a separate incident handled by the Florida Highway Patrol in South Florida, a 58-year-old Delray Beach resident was arrested on Interstate 95 in Boca Raton after being found asleep behind the wheel. Troopers reported that the driver registered breath alcohol test results of .291 and .286, which are more than three times the legal driving limit in Florida.
