Florida and Georgia Face Off in Atlanta Amid Stadium Renovations

The historic rivalry matchup takes place away from its traditional Jacksonville setting due to ongoing stadium renovations.

The annual college football rivalry game between Florida and Georgia takes place on Saturday in Atlanta instead of its traditional venue in Jacksonville, Florida. Due to ongoing renovations at the stadium in Jacksonville, the matchup has been relocated to Atlanta for this year, with plans to play in Tampa next year.

The game holds significant implications for both programs as they remain heavily involved in the thick of the Southeastern Conference and College Football Playoff races. Florida enters the contest under the leadership of first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, who took over in Gainesville ahead of the current season.

The historic rivalry has long been characterized by stretches of intense dominance by individual coaches. Former Florida coach Steve Spurrier compiled an 11-1 record against the Bulldogs from 1990 to 2001, with nine of those eleven victories coming by margins of at least 11 points.

On the opposing sideline, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has maintained a similarly dominant run in the series since taking charge in 2016. Under Smart, the Bulldogs hold an 8-2 record against the Gators and have secured victories in each of their last five meetings.

The relocation and high stakes brought out prominent figures for pregame broadcasts, as analysts Marty Smith and Ryan McGee embraced the holiday spirit in Atlanta. For the occasion, Smith dressed up as the legendary Florida coach Steve Spurrier, while McGee donned a costume representing Kirby Smart.

With the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season scheduled to be released by the selection committee on Tuesday, a victory in Atlanta would provide the Gators with a vital resume boost to re-enter the national postseason conversation.
