Evan Bouchard Lifts Edmonton Oilers Past Minnesota Wild in Overtime
The defenseman scored the game-winning goal on his 27th birthday to secure a 4-3 victory for Edmonton on Tuesday night.
The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday night at Rogers Place, thanks to a decisive power-play goal by defenseman Evan Bouchard. With the victory, the Oilers improved their season record to 7-1-1, continuing a strong start to the campaign.
Edmonton initially established control of the matchup by building a 3-1 lead. Leon Draisaitl scored twice for the Oilers, including a power-play goal in the final seconds of the first period and another early in the second. Mathieu Joseph added a third goal shortly after, giving the home team a comfortable cushion.
However, the Wild mounted a comeback in the third period. Kirill Kaprizov narrowed the deficit with his NHL-leading 11th goal of the season, and Ryan Hartman tied the game a little more than two minutes later, erasing Edmonton's two-goal advantage and forcing the contest into an extra frame.
The Oilers managed to regroup in overtime after earning a four-on-three power play. Bouchard capitalized on the opportunity, scoring with a blistering wrist shot past Minnesota goaltender Jesper Wallstedt at 3:32 of overtime. The game-winner served as a memorable celebration for Bouchard, who was celebrating his 27th birthday.
Connor McDavid continued his remarkable production by recording three assists, bringing his league-leading point total to 26 and extending his season-opening point streak to nine games. McDavid also became the fastest player in NHL history to reach 20 assists in a single season. Devon Levi anchored the Edmonton defense and earned the win in net by stopping 27 shots.
For Minnesota, Joel Eriksson Ek, Kirill Kaprizov, and Ryan Hartman provided the scoring, while Jesper Wallstedt turned away 28 shots in the losing effort. The Wild dropped to 6-2-2 on the season and will look to bounce back when they travel to face the Calgary Flames on Thursday night.
The Oilers will return to action on Thursday evening to host the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes at Rogers Place. Head coach Mike Babcock's squad will look to maintain their early-season momentum while cleaning up the defensive lapses that allowed Minnesota to claw back into Tuesday's game.
