Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney Criticizes Steam's AI Content Disclosures
Epic Games leader Tim Sweeney recently took to social media to condemn Valve's artificial intelligence disclosure requirements, describing them as a political act.
Epic Games Chief Executive Officer Tim Sweeney renewed his sharp criticism of rival company Valve over the weekend, labeling Steam's artificial intelligence content disclosure policy as a "political act." Sweeney argued on social media that requiring developers to reveal whether artificial intelligence was used to create game elements forces them to issue political statements that expose them to criticism from online groups.
The ongoing dispute centers on Steam's rule requiring game developers to specify the use of artificial intelligence in producing shipped content such as artwork, sound, narrative, and localization, while excluding efficiency gains. Sweeney condemned the requirement, stating that "forcing developers to write a political statement to be used against them by the hate mob they’re helping organize is abhorrent."
Sweeney's comments drew immediate pushback from developers and users on social media. David Goldfarb, founder of developer studio The Outsiders, challenged the Epic CEO's characterization, arguing that customers have a right to know what they are purchasing. Critics also noted a contradiction in Sweeney's stance, pointing out that Epic Games' own business-to-business marketplace, Fab, requires similar artificial intelligence provenance disclosures so customers can understand the origin of the assets they buy.
Defending his position, Sweeney argued that Fab operates as a business-to-business marketplace where customers require asset provenance under contract, contrasting it with Valve's consumer-facing store page disclosures. He asserted that Valve's policy creates a real economic cost by undermining developers' businesses and driving cancellation campaigns against them.
The clash comes as Epic Games undergoes a major internal pivot toward artificial intelligence acceleration. The company recently released a refreshed version of the Epic Games Launcher built using generative artificial intelligence tools and announced upcoming development contests centered on the technology. Meanwhile, Valve has maintained its silence on the matter, even as its Steam platform recently surpassed previous records with 43.5 million concurrent users.
Valve originally implemented its artificial intelligence disclosure policy to navigate the legal and creative complexities surrounding generative technology in game development, aiming to maintain transparency for players. While the debate highlights the growing friction between major industry competitors, the lack of a viable alternative has kept Steam in a dominant position within the PC gaming market despite Epic Games offering more favorable revenue splits to developers.
