East Carolina and Memphis Meet in Thursday Night AAC Primetime Clash

Both programs look to rebound from disappointing weeknight defeats as they face off at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

The East Carolina Pirates and the Memphis Tigers face off in an American Athletic Conference primetime matchup on Thursday night at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, with the game broadcast nationally on ESPN2. Both teams enter the contest looking to bounce back from difficult losses suffered during the previous week of college football.

East Carolina brings a 3-3 overall record, including a 1-1 mark in conference play, into Thursday's game. The Pirates are aiming to recover from a stunning 30-17 overtime loss to UAB. In that matchup, East Carolina held a late lead before surrendering a game-tying touchdown and two-point conversion in regulation. UAB then secured the victory in overtime following a game-ending pick-six thrown by quarterback Emory Williams.

Reflecting on the emotional defeat, East Carolina senior defensive lineman JD Lampley said, "That definitely hurt, especially for the older guys in the locker room that have been there the last couple of years, and last year. That hurts. You only get 12, hopefully 13 games. But when you lose like, in a close game....losing sucks in general. But when you lose a game you really feel like you should've won, it sucks."

Memphis enters the game with a 5-2 record overall and a 2-1 conference standing under first-year head coach Charles Huff. The Tigers are also looking to steady themselves after a 31-17 defeat against Tulane. Memphis struggled significantly with ball security in that contest, committing six total turnovers, which included three interceptions and two fumbles by quarterback Marcus Stokes. In response to the setback, Stokes organized a players-only meeting to refocus the team ahead of the matchup with East Carolina.

The Tigers lead the all-time series numbers overall, but recent history favors the Pirates. East Carolina has won the past three meetings against Memphis, including a narrow 31-27 victory in Greenville last season and a 30-29 win on the road in Memphis back in 2021. The last victory for Memphis in the head-to-head series occurred in 2018.

Heading into Thursday night's contest, Memphis is listed as a 10.5-point favorite by sportsbooks, with an over/under set around 54.5 to 55.5 points. The Tigers lean heavily on an offense featuring quarterback Marcus Stokes and running back Jaylin Carter, though they will look to avoid a repeat of last week's turnover troubles against an East Carolina defense that has maintained strong numbers against the pass.

Television coverage for the matchup will be handled by Matt Barrie and Chase Daniel in the booth, with Paul Carcaterra reporting from the sidelines. Fans can also stream the game on platforms such as Fubo and the ESPN app as both teams fight to reestablish momentum in the conference standings.
