Dream Level WNBA Finals With Game 2 Win Against Valkyries
Angel Reese posts 30 points and 16 rebounds as Atlanta defeats Golden State to tie the series ahead of Game 3.
The Atlanta Dream secured a historic 79-65 victory over the Golden State Valkyries at San Francisco's Chase Center, leveling the WNBA Finals at one game apiece. The win marked the franchise's first-ever victory in the WNBA Finals after previous championship appearances ended in sweeps, setting up a crucial Game 3 in Atlanta.
Dream superstar Angel Reese delivered a dominant performance, recording 30 points and 16 rebounds to become only the third player in league history to achieve at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a finals game. Reese shot 10-for-16 from the field and capitalized on opportunities at the free-throw line to help propel her team past the top-seeded Valkyries.
"I'm just doing whatever it takes to win," Reese said. "That game one was tough for us, but we turned a page and moved on and got back to who we are."
Atlanta's defensive effort proved to be a decisive factor, as the team held Golden State to 34.4 percent shooting from the field and forced a franchise-record 19 turnovers. The Dream capitalized on those mistakes by scoring 24 points off turnovers. Guard Allisha Gray contributed 18 points, while Jordin Canada added 13 points and 10 assists.
Golden State struggled to find offensive rhythm after a strong Game 1 performance. Gabby Williams and Tiffany Hayes scored 14 points each for the Valkyries, but the starting lineup struggled overall, shooting just 9-of-35. Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase pointed to the team's turnovers and a lopsided free-throw margin as major hurdles during the game.
"It's frustrating, that's been part of our identity. Because our identity is defense, we hang our hats on that," Nakase said. "The hustle is the turnovers, because in order for you to get turnovers they have to kind of outhustle you to create the turnovers."
The series now shifts to Atlanta for Game 3 at State Farm Arena. Due to scheduling logistics at the larger venue, the matchup was moved up to Wednesday evening. Both teams enter the pivotal contest seeking their first WNBA championship in what has developed into a hard-fought defensive battle.
